Százhatvannál több eltűnt, vagy feledésbe menő debreczeni helynevet írtam ki Debreczen történeti földrajzához gyűjtött adataimból. A helynevek fejtegetését kerültem, ezt a felette nehéz és gyakran megoldhatatlan feladatot.

Ezúttal alig volt egyéb célom, mint a sok eltűnt helynevet újból feleleveníteni és szolgálni azok érdeklődésének, akiket ezer éves múltunk emlékei szórakoztatnak, gyönyörködtetnek avagy szebb jövőnk reményével töltenek el.. .

The geographical place-names usually preserve the memory of the denominator for a long time, they live longer than the memories of social changes. The bigger rivers of Hungary got their names in the Roman times, while the smaller ones and the mountain-tops were denominated by the Hungarians settling here.

The earliest place-names usually express some outer or inner characteristic features of the geographical places or settlements. The Christian world most often gives personal names to towns, villages and parts of estates. The historical names can arouse our national feelings. Some place-names survive very stubbornly, others are gradually forgotten or change a lot in a way that we cannot even recognize their original forms. The process of changign and vanishing is accelerated by the changes in topographical situations and by the effect of human culture on nature (altering the course of rivers, drying reedy parts or meadows and turning them into plough-lands or thinning out forests).

If we give list of the place-names from ages to ages we can follow the historical changes of he area, too.

The paper of Lajos Zoltai is primarily about vanished or vanishing place-names in Debrecen. He collected disappeared names of street and quarters, settlements, farmsteads and estates or parts of estates, and listed names of streams, brooks,) lakes, swamps, meadows, valleys, ditches, wells and dams and those of hills, mountains and ridges.
