A Böszörményi úti és környéki Polgári Olvasókör alázatos és mély tisztelettel bejelenti, hogy a tényleges működését megszakítás nélkül folytatni fogja. A Böszörményi úti és környéki Polgári Olvasókör 1942. év május hó 3-án megtartott választmányi ülésén az a határozat hozatott, hogy egyesületi működésünket a legszűkebb létszámban és a legszűkebb mellékhelységben is folytatni fogjuk. Az a határozat, hogy ideiglenesen szünetelési engedélyt kérjünk, a választmányi ülés elvetette. Ezen újabb bejelentésünket mély alázattal kérjük tudomásul venni. CULTURAL ASSOCIATIONS IN THE GARDEN AREAS OF DEBRECEN TILL THE SECOND WORLD WAR István Gazdag By way of introduction the reader is given a short survey of how the garden areas of Debrecen were formed. The urbanization of the gardens and settlements that came into being in the second half of the 19th century was very slow, which resulted in the difficult living conditions of most of the population here. (In 1926 the number of the inhabitants in the garden areas was estimated at 30.000.j The cultural activity, which is considered to be an integrated part of living conditions, was on a very low level. Most of the associations organized in the garden areas tried to raise the inhabitants’ cultural and recreation activities to a higher level. We can present the activity of the associations on the basis of archival documents and press materials even if the archival documents are very deficient and in the press we can mostly find news. The problem has not been scientifically investigated so far. The paper reveals the circumstances among which the garden areas came into being the occupational pattern of their inhabitants, the activities pursued in the areas and their economical and organizational problems. The paper is finished with the publication of three documents concerning the garden areas. 122
