A z éj sötétjében felállított ágyuk védelmében, Bácsánál a szigetközi oldalra átúsztató török csapatoknak sikerült a hídfőállást elfoglalniuk. Mátyás főherceg tétlenül figyelte a történteket. A török utászok erőltetett ütemben haladtak a pontonhíd építésével. A megfoghatatlan közöny, melyet a császári hadvezetés tanúsított a híd építése láttán, nem magyarázható katonai hozzáértés hiányával, inkább a zsoldos sereg züllött állapotával, nemtörődömségével. Pálffy főkapitány a betegágyából hiába figyelmeztetett a veszélyre, hiába hívta fel a figyelmet az azonnali teendőre, arra, hogy az épülő hidat jól elhelyezett ágyúk tüzével még el lehet pusztítani! Umsonst warnte Hauptmann Palffy von seinem Krankenbett aus vor der Gefahr und machte darauf aufmerksam, daß die sich im Bau befindliche Brücke mit richtig aufgestellten Kanonen noch zerstört werden kann. Aber alles umsonst! I n the defence of the cannons in the darkness of night the Turkish army could occupy a bridgehead at the village of Bácsa. The Archduke Matthias inactively followed the events. The Turkish sappers in a forced march went on building the pontoon bridge. The inconceivable unconcern that the Imperial army leaders showed seeing the building of the bridge cannot be explained by the lack of the naval knowledge but by the neglecy and depravedness of the mercenary troops. Commander-in-Chief Pálffy lying in his sick bed tried to draw attention to the danger and to the possibility that the building bridge could still be ruined with the help of perfectly directed fire.
