History of the Department of Animal Husbandry J. IVÁNCSICS Summary From the reorganization, in 1954, the Department taught numerous disciplines. First time the Department organized teaching of Zootomy and Zoobiology, veterinary hygiene, general and detailed animal breeding, animal nutrition and dairy science subjects and researched connected with the previous ones. From the original unit in 1958 the Department of Zoobiology and veterinary hygiens, in 1971 the Department of Dairy Science and in 1987 the Department of Animal Nutrition seceded. The Department of Animal Husbandry/Breeding teaches general- and detailed animal breeding (zoogenetics, breeding of cattle, horse, swine, sheep, poultry and other small animals) within the scope of agrar engineer training. Besides its basic task the Department organizes and teaches facultative subjects, e.g. zoogenetics, reproductionbiology, breeding of furred animals, fish breeding and breeding of other small animals, beekeeping/apiculture, biotechnology of stock breeding. The Department’s staff delivers lectures for special engineers and postgradual courses. From 1972 to 1992 the members of the Department with scientific degree took part as guiders resp. examiners and censors in 121 doctoral examinations. From 1972 to 1992 six fellow workers finished their scientific researches by the help of scientific postgradual scholarship, provided by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, under the guidance of the Department. The research profile of the Department connected with the provinces of sciences which were taught there during the past four decades. Main fields of research: investigation and developing of biologic-technologic factors of milking technology; elaboration of cattle’s sex control; investigation of pig keeping technologies, decreasing of stress-sensibility; breeding of milk-type sheep stocks, research of morphological, psychological and blood-group markers; developing of performance tests, preservation of Hungarian yellow/hen variety, effect of magnesium dosing on reproduction performance an developmental parameters. 4 patents and 3 innovations were accepted as results of the Department research; the members of the Department published 3-4 publications yearly. Students who make scientific works also takes part in the researches of the Department; at national and international meeting 2-3 of them achieve outstanding results. The Department was led from 1954 to 1986 by Prof. Dr. Szajkó, László, DSc, since 1987 the head of Department has been Prof. Dr. Iváncsics, János, DSc.
