Summary

The castrum doloris of Emperor Francis II at the Cathedral of Győr, 1835

Castrum doloris-es - i.e. castles of grief - were erected at the cathedral of Győr several times during the centuries upon the occasion of the death of prominent personalities, although we have very little information about them. An exception is the pompa funebris erected in 1835 upon the death of Emperor Francis II, which was represented by the aquarelle of Bugár Ferenc. This simple castrum doloris of stepped design followed the structure of the ancient Roman rogus decorated solely by coat of arms. This paper describes this castrum doloris and the funeral ceremony based on this pictorial source and the relevant documents of the Diocesan Archives.
