GASPARIK, M. 2nd group (specimens reinventoried after 1990 based on photos and descriptions of SCHLESINGER 1922) Family Mammutidae HAY, 1922 Genus Mammut BLUMENBACH, 1799 Mammut horsoni HAYS, 1834 (Plate I: 8, 9; Plate III: 1-3) Material — Five specimens. Measurements (of V 93.5) — AU (length: cca. 110 mm; max. width: 86.4 mm); M3 (length: 195.7 mm; max. width: cca. 92 mm). Remarks (to V 93.5.) — Left mandible fragment with the M3 and fragment of the M2 (the anterior half of the first crest is missing) (Plate I: 8). SCHLESINGER (1922) (Plate X\ 7 : 4) figured the specimen as Mastodon (Mammut) americanus PENNANT forma praetypica SCHLESINGER. On his figure, the specimen is more complete because the M2 is unbroken. The locality of the specimen is stated as Batta— Krd, it means that it was found between two towns nowcalled Százhalombatta and Érd. The age of the remain is probably Early Pliocene (MN 14 or 15), SCHLESINGER (1922) dated it as "Oberstes Pontikum" (Early Pliocene). Measurements (of V 93.9) — M 3 (length: 173.3 mm; max. width: 95.20 mm). Remarks (to V 93.9) — Left mandible fragment with broken M 3 (the anterior wall of the first pretrite and the anterior half of the first posttrite are missing) (Plate III: 3). SCHLESINGER (1922) ranked the specimen into Mastodon (Mammut) americanus PENNANT forma praetypica SCHLESINGER. On his figure (Plate XVI: 2), the mandible has larger part of its anterior end with the fragment of M2 (the back wall of the first posttrite and the second and third lophids) and the M3 is unbroken. The locality of the specimen is Ajnácskő (Hajnácka), its age is Late Pliocene (MN 16) (in SCHLESINGER 1922 it is Middle Pliocene or Levantian). Measurements (of V 93.6)— Length: 152.6 mm; max. width: 91.3 mm. Remarks (to V 93.6) — M 3 sin. (Plate III: 1). SCHLESINGER (1922) described a right mandible and a right maxilla fragment with molars (M2-3 and M 23 ) from Szabadka (now Subotica, Serbia) as Mastodon (Mammut) americanus PENNANT forma praetypica SCHLESINGER from the collection of the Hungarian National Museum (Plate XV: 2, 3). Based on his opinion the remains belonged to the same individual. The measurements, the crown morphology and the stage of the wear of the above-mentioned M 3 sin. (V 93.6) is almost the same as the M 3 dext. was figured by SCHLESINGER (Plate XV: 2), so the two teeth ven- probably belonged to the same animal. Based on these data the locality of the M 3 sin. is also Szabadka, its age is unknown (probably Pliocene). Measurements (of V 93.7)— Max. width (at the second lophid): 89.05 mm. Remarks (to V 93.7) — Fragment of a left M 3 ; the second and third lophid (Plate III: 2). SCHLESINGER (1922) figured this specimen as Mastodon (Mammut) horsoni on Plate XIII: 5. On his figure the M3 is complete. The localitv of the specimen is Salgótarján, its age is Pliocene. Remarks (to V 93.8) — Fragment of a right M3 (Plate I: 9). SCHLESINGER (1922) figured this molar fragment in the same condition (Plate XV: 5). The locality of the specimen is not known precisely (Bács—Bodrog County), its age is unknown. Family Gomphotheriidae HAY, 1922 Genus Anancus AYMARD, 1855 Anancus arvernensis (CROIZET & JOBERT, 1828) (Plate II: 5) Material — A bit fragmentary 7 right mandible with M 3 (V 93.10). Measurements — M3 dext. (length: cca. 233 mm; max. width: cca. 90 mm). Remarks — The anterior part of the M3 is broken, its crown shows the typical Anancus arvernensis morphology. The specimen was figured in SCHLESINGER (1922, Plate XII: 3b). This figure shows that the M3 was entire and the coronoid process of the mandible was not as fragmentary as now. Besides, on SCHLESINGERS figure 3a one can see the left mandible of the same individual. The specimens are from Ajnácskő (Hajnácka); their age is Late Pliocene (MN 16). Explanations to Plate II 1 Anancus arvernensis (CROIZET & JOBERT, 1828) — M 3 sin. (V 60.1750); Jászberény; age unknown; x 0.5. 2 Anancus arvernensis (CROIZET & JOBERT, 1828) — right mandible fragment with M 3 dext. (V 60.1746. and V 78.125.); Ajnácskő (Hajnácka); Late Pliocene, MN 16; x 0.33. 3 Gomphotherium angustidens (CUVIER, 1817) — M 2 sin. fr. ÇV 59.1145); Budapest-Kőbánya; Sarmatian, probably MN 8; x 0.5. 4 Gomphotherium angustidens (CUVIER, 1817) — M 3 sin. fr. (V 59.1134); Budapest-Kőbánya; Sarmadan, probably MN 8; X 0.5. 5 Anancus arvernensis (CROIZET & JOBERT, 1828) — right mandible fragment with M 3 dext. (V 93.10); Ajnácskő (Hajnácka); Late Pliocene, MN 16; x 0.33. 6 "Mastodon"grandincisivus SCHLESINGER, 1917 — left mandible fragment with M 3 sin. (V 79.34); Budapest-Pestszentlőrinc; Late Pannonian, probably MN 12; X 0.33.
