FRAGMENTA PALAEONTOLOGICA HUNGARICA 24-25, BUDAPEST, 2007 Cricetodon klariankae n. sp. (Cricetodontini, Rodentia) from Felsőtárkány—Felnémet (Northern Hungary) by János HÍR Abstract — A new Cricetodon species was found in the locality Felsőtárkány—Felnémet. The teeth of the species are high crowned but different from those of the genera Hispanomys and By^antinia. Keywords — Mammalia, Rodenda, Miocene, Sarmadan, Astaracian, Taxonomy. HÍR J.: Cricetodon klariankae n. sp. (Cricetodontini, Rodentia) from Felsőtárkány-Felnémet (Northern Hungary) — fragmenta Palaeontologica Hungarica, 24-25: 15-24. Introduction The Late Sarmatian (MN7/8) palaeovertebrate locality of Felsőtárkány-Felnémet is situated on the north-western side of the motor-road between the two villages, north of the city of Eger. The samples from the locality were taken by the author in 2003—2004. A description of the locality and the elaboration of the rodent fauna are given by LIÍR (2006). Two fossiliferous layers were found: FelsőtárkányFelnémet 2/3 (= FF 2/3) and Felsőtárkány-Felnémet 2/7 (= FF 2/7). The list of the fossil leporids and rodents found in the locality is given in the right column. Following a comparative analysis, it was concluded that a large cricetodontid from layer FF 2/3 is a new species. In the fauna FF 2/7, only one Cricetodon M 3 were found. The description of this new species is given below. The SW end of the basin is open and connected to the Great Pannonian Basin (PELIKÁN 2005). The infilling of the basin consists of the following elements: 1. In the lowermost stratigraphie position there is a Sarmatian sandstone, containing brackish molluscan fauna (PELIKÁN pers. comm.). 2. The ignimbrite, Upper Rhyolite Tuff (Felnémet Rhyolite Tuff Formation), dated by K/Ar to 13.7+0.8 Ma. (MÁRTON & PÉCSKAY 1998). 3. Above the ignimbrite there is a lacustrine-continental series characterized by the Sarmatian Felsőtárkány palaeoflora (ANDREÁNSZKY & KOVÁCS 1955) and the vertebrate faunas of Felsőtárkány (KRETZOI 1982), Felsőtárkány 1 (HÍR 2001) and Felsőtárkány 3/2 (HÍR 2004a), which are found on the northern margin of village Felsőtárkány, in a field called "Güdör-kert". Systematics Systematics follows that of MC. KENNA & BELL (1997); the dental terminology is after RUMMEL (1998). Order Rodentia BOWDICH, 1821 Family Muridae ILLIGER, 1811 Tribe Cricetodontini SCHAUB, 1925 Genus Cricetodon LARTET, 1851
