HÍR, J. & MÉSZÁROS, L. GY Conclusions from the rodents During the study of the biostratigraphical position of the rodent fauna from Sámsonhaza the most important facts are the following: — the coexistence of Muscardinus sansaniensis, Megacricetodon minor, Eumyarion medius; — the presence of a Cricetodon species which is close to C. hungaricus; — the dominant glirid is the Miodyromys complex. Taking them into consideration the most probable classification is the MN 6 zone if we accept the wellelaborated biostratigraphy of Bavaria and Switzerland as standard (BOLLIGER 1994, KÄLLN 1997, SACK 1999). The geographical distance between Sámsonháza and Hasznos is only 8 km. The latter locality was put into the MN 6 zone (DE BRUIJN et al 1992, 1993). But Sámsonháza is probable slightly younger than Hasznos because the morphological differences in the Cricetodon material and the presence of E. bifidus in Hasznos and E. medius in Sámsonháza. But no remarkable differences are between the two Megaaicetodon populations. The most important conclusion of the fauna is connected to the age of the Sajó Valley Formation (HÁMOR 1985) or "terrestrial Sarmatian", that has been regarded as exclusively Sarmatian. After the elaboration of the microvertebrata and the molluscan material from Sámsonháza (the investigation of the latter is going on by KÓKAY) we have to accept that sediments of the Sajó Valley Formation partially refer to the Middle- and Late Badenian. We presume a lagoon as depositional environment of the Sámsonháza vertebrate fauna, because the co-occurence of marine, brackish, freshwater and continental species was found in the molluscan fauna (KÓKAY personal communication) . ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS — We thank to Dr. J. AGUILAR (Montpellier), Dr. B. ENGESSER (Basel), Dr. D. KÁLIN (Bern), Dr. H. MAYR (München) and Dr. L. VAN DEN HOEK Ostende (Leiden) for sending taxonomical literature for the determinations. Also we express our thanks to Dr. L. KORDOS who let us to study comparative materials. The field activity and the rodent research are a part of the T 029148 project of the Hungarian Scientific Research Fund (OTKA). The elaboration of the insectivore material was supported by Bolyai János Research Grant, and in the frame of the F 038041 project of the Hungarian Scientific Research Fund (OTKA).
