Cricetinus janossyi sp. n. (Figs. 2-21) Holotype: mandibula fi, with ml-m3 (No. 5) (Figs. 4, 12) Paratype: maxilla fr. with M2-M3 (Figs. 2-3) Type locality: Osztramos 7, northern Hungary. Stratum typicum: terra rossa, karstic fissure filling. Age: The chronological position of Osztramos 7 within the Pliocene is discussed. In the original references JÁNOSSY (1973, 1978) put it between Csarnóta 2 and Beremend into the "Beremendian phase". In the system of MEIN (1975) and DE BRUIJN et al. (1992) it refers to the MN unit 16 a. In the zonation of FEJFAR & HEINRICH (1990) it refers to the Mimomys polonicus zone of the Borsodia-Villányia superzone. In the immediate past KORDOS (1992, 1993) published a younger age for Osztramos 7. and put it into the Kislangia zone of his biochronological system. (It refers to the older part of MN 17. unit of MEIN (1975) and perhaps partially refers to the Mimomys pliocaenicus zone of FEJFAR & HEINRICH (1990). So KORDOS (op. cit.) regards the possible mixed composition of the fauna too after the results of REUMER'S (1984) study on soricids. Derivatio nominis: honoured to Prof. Dénes JÁNOSSY who collected the material and gave the first evaluation of the fauna Osztramos 7. Diagnosis: Large sized Cricetinus species (Figs. 17-21.). Preliminary determinations: Cricetinus sp. (JÁNOSSY, 1973, 1978, 1979, 1986) Material: 1 maxilla fr. with M2-M3, 2M2, 1M3, 8 mandibulae ft*, with complete toothrows, 13 mandibulae fr. with incomplete toothrows, 3ml, 3m2, 3m3. Deposition: Paleontological Department of the Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest. DESCRIPTION Ml - Unknown. M2 - In the available teeth the 4 main cusps and the anterior cingula are the constant elements. Mesolophe, mesostyle, entostyle, metalophule do not exist. TABLE !..
