THE EGERIAN VEGETATION OF POMÁZ Pomáz is one of the richest Egerian paleobotanical localities in Hungary. It yielded the most complete record of zonal vegetation (with traces of riparian vegetation), that is, it is the best representative of the overall Egerian vegetation in the area. 1. Subtropical rainforest (zonal vegetation) Palaeocarya orsbergensis, Platanus fraxinifolia, "Rhamnus" warthae, and species of Quercus, and Leguminosae dominated the foliage level of the forest. The latter group displayed high diversity, including "Acacia" parschlugiana, "Dalbergia" bella, "Colutea" kvaceki, "Robinia" regeli, "Cassia" sp., Leguminocarpon div. sp, Leguminosae div. sp.) The foliage level was completed by other species, such as Platanus neptuni, Castanopsis toscana, Dicotylophyllum jungii, etc. The foliage level itself must have been consisted of several strata, and it was associated with a very rich shrub stratum, dominated by Daphnogene and Laurophyllum species. In all probability, Litsea ipolytarnocense, Rosa lignitum, Wisteria aff. fallax, belonged to the shrub stratum as well. Considering the ecological demands of Rosa, it must have lived in more open parts of the forest. Beside the laurophyllous, evergreen plants, this vegetation type was formed by deciduous, thermophilous Paleotropical species. We consider it typical Egerian zonal vegetation. 2. Gallery forest (edaphic vegetation) The riparian vegetation, fringing the watercourses, plays a subordinate role in the Egerian floras of Hungary. Though we know a few localities providing evidence of a rich riparian vegetation, it is represented in almost all floras by a single species, Ulmus pyramidalis. This species is the only common Arctotertiary element in the Hungarian Fig. 44. Schematic section of the vegetation in Pomáz.
