uniplicate. The entire shell surface is costate, 14 to 16 low costae on each valve run straight to the anterior end without bifurcation. The cross-section of costae is triangular. Internal characters: There were no adequate specimens available for serial sectioning due to the sparry calcite filling. Remarks: R. sublatifrons BÖSE, 1898 is regarded here synonymous with R. latifrons. Vígh (1943) illustrated R. latifrons without description. In the Cirpa ? latifrons lack of serial sections the problem of generic classification cannot be solved. The assignment to Cirpa, however, seems to be more appropriate (A. Vörös, pers. comm.). The small individuals of C? latifrons can easily be mistaken for wider specimens of Calcirhynchia plicatissima. Larger specimens of Cirpa latifrons can be easily separated as their beak is suberect, the angle between the lateral margins is significantly larger, and the specimens are wider and less convex. Distribution: According to Aimeras (1964), Rhynchonella latifrons is Hettangian to Sinemurian in age. He treated R. sublatifrons separately, which is Pliensbachian in age. Beside the Bakony Mountains, this species is known from the Eastern Alps (Hierlatz), the Southern Alps (Bergamo, Lugano, Saltrio) and the Gerecse Mountains.
