FRAGMENTA MINERALOGICA et PALAEONTOLOGICA 13. Budapest, 1987 p. 65-88 Karstocricetus skofleki gen. n., sp. n. and the evolution of the Late Neogene Cricetidae in the Carpathian Basin By L. KORDOS (Received November 29, 1985) Abstract. The present study is part of a taxonomical and stratigraphie revision that aims at a better knowledge of the Neogene mammalian fauna of the Carpathian Basin. As a result, disregarding the ambiguous comparison with the finds originating from greater distances, the author describes the succession of the local Cricetidae. The study deals with 16 species of 10 genera: Eumyarion bifidus, Democricetodon gaillardi, Neocricetodon schauni , N. fahlbuschi , Karstocricetus skofleki gen.n., sp. n., Karstocricetus sp., Cricetus kormosi, Crice tus sp. , Kowalskia polonica , K. magna, K. intermedia, Cricetulus spp. I-II, Cri- cetinus europaeus , Allocricetus cf. bursae and Baranomys sp. The hamster like rodents (Cricetidae) were a permanent and characteristic group in the Carpathian Basin during the Late Neogene (Lower Pannonian, Pontian, and Pliocene). The about 10 million years' period is represented by ten, biostratigraphically thoroughly investigated and correlated localities: Rudabánya MN 9 KRETZOI (1976) Csákvár MN 10 KRETZOI (1954) Sümeg MN lu KRETZOI (1985) Kohfidisch MN 11 BACHMAYER and WILSON (1970, 1978) SzéchenyiHill MN 11 KRETZOI (1980) Tardosbánya MN 12 KORDOS (1985) Polgárdi 4 MN 13 new locality Osztramos 1 MN 1415 JÁNOSSY (1972) Ivanovce (A+B) MN 15 FEJFAR (1970) Csarnóta 2 MN 15 KRETZOI (1962) From the earlier published localities several cricetid taxa have been described (Neo cricetodon schaubi KRETZOI, Neocricetodon transdanubicus KRETZOI, Kowalskia fahlbuschi BACHMAYER and WILSON, Cricetus kormosi SCHAUB, Kowalskia intermedia FEJFAR and Cricetinus europaeus KRETZOI) or shown to occur (Eumyarion bifidus (FAHLBUSCH), Demo cricetodon gaillardi (SCHAUB), Kowalskia polonica FAHLBUSCH, K. magna FAHLBUSCH, Cricetus sp., Allocricetus cf. bursae SCHAUB, Baranomys sp. ).
