In the Mediterranean, the Levantine coast, in SE Europe as well as in SW Asia the most archaic remains of the Archidiskodon line have been separated from the more progressive Arch, merid. meridionalis basic form under different names: Archidiskodon meridionalis archaicus (Depéret & Mayet, 1923) "Elephas antiquus romanus Stefanescu, 1924" Archidiskodon africanavus (Arambourg, 1952) Archidiskodon meridionalis taribanensis Gabunia & Vekua, 1963 Archidiskodon meridionalis proarchaicus Melentis, 1965 Archidiskodon gromovi Alekseeva &Garutt, 1965 Chronology of Archidiskodon gromovi Arch, gromovi is more archaic and older than Arch, meridionalis. It is known from the lower Late Pliocene of the southern part of the European Region of the Soviet Union, from the lower horizon of the Akcagilian Complex; from the Moldavski and Chapry faunal complexes (Early Villafrancian), as well as in SW Siberia from the Podpusker-Lebjaze faunal complexes (GARUTT & BAJGUSEVA 1981). The most probable scheme of the chronostratigraphy of the Aszód gravel-complex can be established on the basis of the Archidiskodon remains as the following: 1. "lower gravel"- with Archidiskodon gromovi . Direct stratigraphie al data are missing. The terminus post quern of the lower gravel is the "Lower Levantine sandy clay with M. arvernensis ". It is probable that Arch, gromovi had reached the Carpathian Basin by the end of the Ruscinian, during the Csarnótan together with SE European — SW Asian forest and forest-steppe faunal elements (KRETZOI & PÉCSI 1979). Age: Upper Pliocene. 2. "middle gravel" - with Arch, meridionalis meridionalis. Its single known locality is the section at a depth of 6-8 m in the gravel of the well dug in the Aszód railway station in 1873 (HALAVÁTS 1898). The terminus post quern of the middle gravel is the lower gravel with Arch, gromovi. In the Carpathian Basin Arch, merid. merid . occurred in the Lower Pleistocene, Upper Villányian, Lislángian (KRETZOI 1954, KRETZOI & VÉRTES 1965, KRETZOI & ai. 1982). 3. "upper gravel and/or sand with gravel" - with an evolved Archidiskodon molar (SCHLESINGER 1922, P. 205., Inv. Nr. A. 50) Lost. If this is really a sensu lato progressive ArchidisFig. 3 Arch, gromovi Mg dext. (V. 64.903) Aszód, (Drawn by I. Pise h ) kodon this must be the Arch, merid. ürömensis which occurred in the Carpathian Basin; its chronology is Lower Pleistocene, Lower Biharian Stage, Templomhegyian Horizon (VÖRÖS 1979).
