AGE OF THE FAUNA The limited ammonite fauna consists of the following forms: Phylloceras trifoliatum Neum. ?Calliphylloceras sp. indet. Ptychophylloceras flabellatum (Neum.) Prohecticoceras haugi (Pop.-Hätz.) Lissoceras (Lissoceras) ferrifex (Zitt.) Lissoceras (L. ) sp. indet. Cadomites (Cadomites) sp. indet. Cadomites (Polypiecti tes) cornutus Kopik Choffatia (Subgrossouvria) uriniacensis (Liss.) Morphoceras multiforme Arkell Rugiferites (Rugiferites) n.sp. aff. R. (R.) polypleurus (Buckm.) Rugiferites (R.) sp. indet. The stratigraphie ally undiagnostic phylloceratids are associated to some important elements. Morpho ceras multiforme and Cadomites (P.) cornutus undoubtedly indicate the Lower Bathonian Zigzag Zone while Prohecticoceras haugi . Rugiferites spp. and Choffatia (S.) uriniacensis suggest the Middle Bathonian Subcontractus Zone. The presence of elements of two horizons within a single faunula can be due to faunal mixing in the Middle Bathonian. Middle Bathonian is a horizon of widespread occurrence in Western Sicily. Condensed or mixed faunas of similar age were recorded e.g. from Monte Erice and Monte Bonifato by WENDT (1963), and from Monte Inici by ARKELL (1954). ( cum syn. ) Description: There are two specimens in the collected material, the bigger one is of c-a. 5.5 cm in diameter, but worn obliquely. This is a wholly septate, incomplete form with some remains of the recrystallized shell. The smaller specimen is similarly preserved, its dimensions are at 23 mm diameter: 14 (61%); 8.5 (37%); 0.6 (2.6%). The umbilicus is extremely narrow, the whorl-section is elliptical, with oblique umbilical slope, convex flanks and arched venter. The specimens are smooth, without traces of sculpture. Suture lines cannot be seen clearly. Remarks : The possible cause why this species is rarely mentioned was discussed elsewhere (GALÁCZ 1980, p. 28). The occurrence in this fauna is an argument for regarding this species as a common element in Mediterranean Bajocian-Bathonian faunas. In Hungary P. trifoliatum occurred only in the Upper Bajocian, but elsewhere it was recorded from the Bathonian too.
