In Memóriám ANDOR SEMSEY (December 22, 1833 - August 14, 1923) Andor SEMSEY, landowner, the greatest Maecenas of the Natural Sciences in Hungary was born 150 years ago. He spent quite a fortune (some 2.5 million Austro-Hungarian Crowns) from his private property on sponsoring advances in Natural and first of all Earth Sciences. The Mineralogical and the Palaeontological Departments of the Hunga rian Natural History Museum obtained their collections, equipment and library mostly with help of his grants. Construction of the building and the furnishings of the Hungarian Geological Institute was in a greater part financed by him. SEMSEY supported Loránd EÖTVÖS' geophysical experiments with the famous torsion balance; generously provided Universities with money and paid travel expenses for the scientists.
