Vörös A. szerk.: Fragmenta Mineralogica Et Palaentologica 11. 1983. (Budapest, 1983)

JÁNOSSY, 1 979). In this a typical Lower-Middle-Pleistocene fauna was found in a yellowish sediment. The sediment-petrographical investigation of this proved it to be typical loess. The rich fauna of small mammals in this loess consists of extinct species or rather extinct genera, with Mimomys savini as index fossil. We excavated the filling of the locality in 36 layers (20-30 cm-s thickness) to the depth of six meters between 1975 and 1982, - chiefly working in the mentioned loess or loess-like sediment with more or less strong calcite intercalations. The statistical composition of the voles changed within this sequence from absolute predominance of the Pitymys arvalidens to twice increasing waves of the Lagurus pannonicusarankae-group (see Fig. 1). From layer 28 to the lower levels the sediment became reddish or reddish brown. We found a phalanx of a monkey ( Macaca sp. ) in layer 2 9 and a first lower molar of a Lemming ( Lemmus sp. ) in layer 27. Both are sporadical finds among the thousands of bones. We discuss their ecological viz. climatical significance later in this paper. Considering the fact that the excavations are pending and the locality No. 2 of Somssich-hegy is therefore practically unknown in the literature (JANOSSY 1 979), let us give here the whole faunal list - identified so far and summarized from all layers together as follows: Celtis sp.
