\A<;\. 1. Z. The Vraconnian Substa«íe and the History of its Stud\ in Hungary A summary of study history The Cretaceous rocks of the Bakony Range, belonging in the Transdanubian section of the Central Range in Hungary, is known to research workers since 1858. The names FOETTERLE, ROMER, SCHWABEHAU , but principally of F. HAUER are linked with the earliest investigations. In 1862, HAUER described a cephalopod fauna of 20 items from the so-called "glauconitic" and "turrilitic" marl near Zirc, introducing them as "Nana" and "Pénzeskut" beds to stratigraphie literature, and indicating the age of the fauna as Gaultian. + In 1909, H. BÖCKH raised the probability of the layers extending into the Lower Cenomanian. He contended the existence of a connection between the Lower Cretaceous and Cenomanian stage as present also in the Western Alps. H. TAEGER (1912-1935) discussed the region in several publications. He considered the formation unequivocally as Gaultian. The collected material was sent to H. D0UVTLLÉ, who found the age of the fauna as Vraconnian (1933). After an extensive collecting and a preliminary assessment, J. NOSZKY, jun. , corroborated the presence of the Vraconnian substage in 193 4. However, and mostly in the publications of micropaleontological authors, the Cenomanian stage, as the age of the beds, occours often (SZÖRÉNYI, 1955; MAJZON, 1961; SIDÓ, 1966). It seems necessary to note that owing to certain administrative reorganisation in 1956, a new community called Pénzesgyőr was formed from the component villages Bakonybél, Lókut, and Szentgál. The earlier villages occurring in old locality labels, and thus also in literature, are Kerteskő, Pénzeskut, Kőrisgyőr.
