Fragm. Min. Pal. 3. 1972. Planktonic Foraminifera of the lower Tertiary succession in the Taramsa section, Qena, Nile Valley, Egypt By A. I. Kenawy Cairo, Arab Republic of Egypt Introduction Lower Tertiary rocks have a wide distribution all over Egypt. The first systematic study of these rocks is done by ZITTEL (1883) who accopanied the Rohlf 's Expedition to the Libyan Desert. In his work, ZITTEL equated the lower Eocene with the "Libysche Stufe". He futher subdivided the "Libysche Stufe" into an "Unterlibysche Stufe" which is equal to the early Eocene or Paleocene and an "Oberlibysche Stufe" which was considered as late lower Eocene. ZITTEL (1883) mentioned that the "Libysche Stufe" is developed from the left side of the Nile and seems also to be widely distributed to the East of the Nile. He considered (1883. p. 95) that the "Die schönsten Profile" of the Libyan group is to be found in Ain el Uadi and Bir Diker and Bir Murr, Parafra Oasis, Western Desert. The Libyan group consists of the following formations: Esna Shale Parafra limestone Thebes formation Operculina limestone Minia formation Alveolinenkalk "Oberlibysche Stufe" of ZITTEL
