(SA-Kuva) FINNISH ORDERS, DECORATIONS AND MEDALS IN THE COLLECTION OF THE HUNGARIAN NATIONAL MUSEUM Summary The development of the Finnish system of orders, decorations and medals was strongly connected with the early period of the history of the independent Finnish state. Finland declared her independence from Russia on 6 December 1917, which soon was followed by a civil war. The war was fought from January to May 1918 between the "Whites", i.e. forces on the side of the government, also supported by Germany, and the "Reds", who were supported by Soviet-Russia. The conflict was won by the White Army, or officially the Forces of the Republic of Finland, which mainly comprised Civil Guard formations and was led by General Gustaf Mannerheim, formerly a successful commander of the Imperial Russian Army. The war was still raging when Mannerheim initiated the estab­lishment of military decorations. Thus, on 4 March 1918, the first Finnish national award, the Cross of Liberty, which was only to be awarded in times of war, was instituted. As 174
