THE POLÁNYI FAMILY OF HÍDVÉG. A CASTLEBUILDER FAMILY AT THE TURN OF THE MIDDLE AGES AND THE EARLY MODERN PERIOD IN VAS COUNTY

Summary

In 1502 Osvát Polányi, the vicebanus of Slavonia, was permitted by the king to build a castle in Hídvég (Rábahídvég, Vas County). The castle unfortunately had been ruined by the 18th century.

The author shows the genealogy of the family and the social status of the members with the help of the written sources and comparing to other similar castlebuilder families. The opportunity of raising a castle was a status symbol that time. The autor emphasizes how important was to finance the relatives' studies at foreign universities as well. To be an educated nobile was a precondition of serving the lord or substituting for him in case of holding a public office.
