GOLD COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS IN THE JANKOVICH COLLECTION - ABSTRACTS Summary Considering its size, the Jankóvich Collection is one of the largest collections of artefacts acquired by the Hungarian National Museum. It contains over 80,000 items, including books, diplomas, codices, thousands of goldsmith's works, weapons, paintings, coins and medals. Even though according to various calculations there should be about 6000 numismatic items, the actual number is unclear. Experts of the collection's history claim that not all items contained in the catalogue had actually been acquired by the museum, depending on what is understood by numismatics. Jankovich himself might not not have regarded numismatics the most important part of his collection, as it had been reported that he exchanged the eighty most valuable pieces of his numismatic collection for a goldsmith's work with Mihály Wiczay, one of the most outstanding coin collectors. The coin and medal collection includes antique and Hungarian coins and commemorative medals. Out of the roughly 6000 items there are 1102 gold items out which 52 items are commemorative medals. This number and the composition of the collection suggests that for Jankovich the history of monetary coins was more important. 89
