Szoleczky Emese: A huszti vár ábrázolás-történetéhez

tion as thoroughly as possible, a critical analysis of Huszt Castle, based on the geographic information system, is also being completed. Although the compilation of this iconography was intended to be exhaustive, portrayals hiding in foreign and private collections, with special regard to the duplicated material of the 20 1' 1 century, may well cause surprise in this respect. The study contains three chapters, each dealing with periods that arc clearly separable in terms of representation. In the 16 t h— 18 t h century, an era identifiable with the activity of engineer corps officers, the castle met its military function in a more or less perfect condition. From the end of the 18 1' 1 century to the beginning of the 20 1' 1 century, illustrators and painters recorded the ruins of Huszt from different approaches, as an element of the landscape. By means of photography, the period lasting to 1945 saw artistic and less demanding pictures of the castle. Unfortunately, in contrast to the average, Huszt is not represented in those 16 t h—18 t h century scries that are well known for depicting castles, like Birckcnstein, Hoefnagel, Sibmacher, etc. So much the more detailed and liner are Huszt Castle's panorama-like drawings of the same period, produced by the imperial engineer corps officers for a modernisation purpose. These might be found in the Austrian State Archives, the Austrian National Library, the Hungarian Széchényi Library, the Hungarian State Archives and the Military History Institute and Museum. From the end of the 18 1' 1 century to the end of the 19 1' 1 century, artists recorded the ruins of the castle from a romantic approach, primarily for illustrated periodicals. Some unique, high quality works, like those of Franz Jaschke and Simon Hollósy, enrich the products of this period. The survey of representations comes to an end by introducing the pre1945 photographs of Huszt. A separate group is formed by postcards issued on the occasion of Sub-Carpathia's reannexation in 1939. Some of these introduce the last military event of the castle: taking of the oath of the 24 t h Honvéd Border Rifle Battalion. Fordította: Sallay Gergely Pál 53
