O. Merkl szerk.: Folia Entomologica Hungarica 67. (Budapest, 2006)
Harpalus (Harpalus) politus DEJEAN, 1829 - The first records from Budapest, Gyulaj (CSÍKI 1946), the Börzsöny Mts (ENDRŐDI 1974) and the Hortobágy National Park (HlEKE 1983) are based on misidentifications, the specimens belong to Harpalus flavicornis DEJEAN, 1829. The only specimen of "Harpalus politus" from the Kiskunság National Park (ÁDÁM & MERKL 1986) is a misidentified Harpalus froelichii STURM, 1818. Most likely the data of Harpalus politus from the Bakony Mts (TÓTH 1973), Southern Transdanubia (HORVATOVICH 1980) and Kötegyán in Békés county (HORVATOVICH & SZARUKÁN 1986) are also cases of misidentification. SZÉL (1996: 165) discussed the status of this species at Harpalus flavicornis. The record by GY. ROZNER (2003) from Látrány (Somogy county) must be based on a misidentified specimen of H. tardus. Although the presence of Harpalus politus in Hungary cannot be excluded, at the moment no correctly determined specimen of this rare species is available from Hungary. According to HÙRKA (1996) it occurs in Central and Eastern Europe, Balkan Peninsula, Caucasus, Kazakhstan, Siberia. The European records are either very old or often cases of misidentification (MÜLLER-MOTZFELD 2004). Ophonus (Metophonus) brevicollis (AUDINET-SERVILLE, 1821) - This species is recorded by several Hungarian authors, e.g. KAUFMANN (1914), KASZAB (1937), SZÉKESSY (1943), CSÍKI (1946), TÓTH (1973), ENDRŐDI (1974), HORVATOVICH (1978, 1981, 1982) and SlROKI (1981), but the data refer to O. rufibarbis (FABRICIUS, 1792), which is one of the most common Ophonus species in Hungary. ÁDÁM (1996) listed it, too, on the basis of recalling a capture from Akasztó (L. ÁDÁM, pers. comm.), but the specimen is missing. LÖBL & SMETANA (2003) mentioned it from Hungary, probably adopting the record of ÁDÁM ( 1996). According to MÜLLER-MOTZFELD (2004) it occurs in Western and Southern Europe (except Great Britain) and the Balkan Peninsula. In Central Europe so far it has only been found in the Czech Republic (Moravia). It seems that Ophonus brevicollis does not occur in Hungary, because all the specimens identified by me were O. rufibarbis. Zuphium olens (P. ROSSI, 1790) - It is mentioned by ÁDÁM (1996), but there is no material belonging to this species in the collection of HNHM. KUTHY (1897) and CSIKI (1946) did not list it, CSIKI (1905-1906) only mentioned it from the Mediterranean, Caucasus, Turkestan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, but not from the Carpathian Basin. Nearer to us it occurs in Croatia and Bulgaria (LÖBL & SMETANA 2003). According to MÜLLER-MOTZFELD (2004) it is distributed in Southern Europe, Africa, West and South Asia reaching as far as South-east India. In Central Europe it was observed only on two occasions near Lake Fertő (impossible to determine whether or not from the Hungarian side).
