FOLIA ENTOMOLOGICA HUNGARICA ROVARTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK Volume 64 2003 pp. 69-84. Checklist of the Hungarian mayfly fauna (Ephemeroptera) T. KOVÁCS and E. BAUERNFEIND Abstract: A checklist of 91 Ephemeroptera species from Hungary is given. Key words: Ephemeroptera, checklist, Hungary INTRODUCTION The first paper summarizing faunistic data of mayflies was written by Mocsáry (1899), who recorded 25 species from the present area of Hungary. Újhelyi (1959, 1966) listed 46 and 51 species, respectively. The preliminary list by Tóth (1992/?) gave a total of 70 species for Hungary. Recent changes in taxonomic opinions (e.g. Kluge & Novikova 1992, Belfiore et al. 1999, Thomas et al. 2000) and new results from faunistic research as well as the need to investigate some earlier doubtful records make it necessary to compile a new checklist of Hungarian mayflies. Unfortunately the attribution of generic (and/or subgeneric) names to several taxa within the families Baetidae, Heptageniidae and Ephemerellidae is still rather controversial. To facilitate comparison with recent keys the nomenclature in the present checklist follows the (provisional) use in Bauernfeind and Humpesch (2002). For a more detailed discussion of alternative opinions see Haybach ( 1998), Bauernfeind & Moog (2001) and Bauernfeind & Humpesch (I.e.). MATERIAL AND METHODS The present paper is based on a careful evaluation of previously published faunistic records. Literature sources published prior to Mocsáry (1899) have not been included in the present study. Records based on previously published data are
