Publisher: Ampyx-Verlag Dr Adreas Stark, Halle (Saale), 2002, 167 pp, 407 figs, ISBN 3-932795-14-8; 23.5 x 22 cm This is an excellently illustrated bilingual book (English, German) for anybody interested in arthropods preserved in Baltic amber. Four chapters give important information and help in identification of the taxonomic groups that can be found in inclusions. The volume includes visual keys and cladograms for the orders represented. Six orders of Arachnida, two orders of Crustacea, three subclasses of Myriapoda and 31 orders of insects (inch Mantophasmatodea, described recently) are mentioned. The most important features besides the precise drawings make recognition of the groups easy. More complete list of characters and the number of species described so far from amber are given in the second chapter. In chapter three colour photographs of very good quality are presented, many of them with new technique that makes it possible to reproduce the original colours of the inclusion. For several pictures computer-based three-dimensional reconstruction program has been used to increase the depth of focus. In this part of the book identifications of the specimens are given as far as superfamily, family or subfamily level. The fourth chapter includes glossary, references to recent Arthropods and Arthropods in amber, internet addresses of websites treating Arthropods and/or amber and an index of scientific names. The book contains more than 300 colour pictures of the representatives of over 200 families of arthropods, which make it useful also for collectors of amber specimens.
