Taxonomic comments - Linnaeus (1758) described Cynips quercuspetioli and referred in second term to drawings in Rösel (1747: tables 35-36). No doubts, this species belongs to Andricus kollari. However, the short Linnaeus' description of the adult wasp, given before the gall description, is a Synergus, so this name is not available. Geoffroy (1762: 301-302) described in a non-binominal form a cynipid species that posteriorly Olivier (1790) named as Cynips scabra. The name given by Geoffroy is not valid since it is not binominal. In Olivier (1790: 787) Cynips scabra is described as making galls on oak leaves, and a figure from Reaumur ( 1737: pi. 35, fig. 5) is given. On the basis of this drawing, without doubts, it is a gall of A. kollari on a twig, but the gall location given in the description (on leaves) suggests Cynips quercusfolii, asexual form, as the most possible option, since it was defined as "Le Cynips de la galle raboteuse des feuilles du Chêne" - the same definition found in Geoffroy (1762) and Fourcroy (1785). Therefore this name is a nomen dubium. Fourcroy (1785: 384) described Cynips scaber, using Geoffroy's description and again referred that the gall is located on leaves, thus this name is also a nomen dubium and probably belongs to the asexual form of Cynips quercusfolii. Anthoine (1794) in his paper on oak galls, gave descriptions of some species, however, without using binominal names. Andricus kollari is defined as "Cynips gallae sphericae, tinctoriae" and, thus according to the ICZN this name is not available, and it is not a synonym. For this reason it is not included into the list of names above. Hartig (1843) redescribed Cynips gallaetinctoriae (Olivier) as C. tinctoria (unjustified emendation) and erroneously reported C. tinctoria as a species, described by Linnaeus. This material, collected in Austria, belongs to A. kollari. In the same paper, Hartig described Cynips kollarii (in honour of Dr Kollar), but later on, authors have always used the name "kollari" for this species. According to Dalla Torre (1893: 72) the first author using this name was Lacaze-Duthiers ( 1853), but the author never used the name A. kollari. Therefore the first author using the name A. kollari is Smith (1862) (after Dalla Torre & Kieffer 1910). According to the ICZN, A. kollari has been used by many authors ( 10 authors, during the last 50 years in more than 25 different papers), and thus could be conserved, instead of the original "kollarii", given by Hartig (1843). Giraud, in his manuscript, also worked on "A. tinctoriae", which he planned to describe as Cynips indigena. Houard (1909) mentioned this name in the reference of a label of the Sichel's collection in the MNHN, Paris. Later Houard (1911) published Giraud's manuscript, and referred to C. indigena as a synonym of Cynips tinctoria (Olivier). After the examination of the material of C. indigena
