The insect fauna is most conspicuous in this area. The flowers attract numerous species of various orders, notably lepidopterans. The purple or white flowers of the mountain manaca tree (Tibouchina mutabilis) and the cutia-tail shrub (Stifftia chrysantha) are frequented by sphingids. Incandescent lights attract nocturnal insects. The Cerrado This is the Brazilian term denoting open savannah-like grasslands with meadows and forests of various compositions and sizes. This type of habitat is characteristic of Central Brazil, south of the Amazonian basin and north, north-east of the extended wetlands of the Pantanal. The diversity of the cerrado' s flora is greatly influenced by climatic conditions, the availability of water, land formation and soil type as well as the degree of human activity. The diverse native flora - where undisturbed - supports a complex fauna. The composition and stability of the indigenous fauna is markedly impacted by urbanisation, industrialisation and agriculture. The collecting was carried out at the Escola Fazenda F. M. Cameiro, 14 km north of Aracu, an agricultural town in Goias State. The Fazenda is run by the Brazilian government and serves as a school for young agricultural workers. Consequently, it has altered environments, mostly pastures, fields of various crops, orchards and gardens. Native forests and grasslands only remained in pockets, mainly along watercourses and on low hills. Cultivated flower gardens support a varied lepidopteran fauna, including a few species of Sphingidae. Mercury vapour lights as well as fluorescent lights at night attracted a number of insects.
