László On the taxonomy of the genus Contropis Wiltshire, 1967 (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) — The synonymy of Contropis tagana Wiltshire, 1967 with Selidosema modestaria Piingeler, 1914 is established; modestaria is transferred to Contropis Wiltshire, 1967 (comb. n). INTRODUCTION During the taxonomic treatment of the Geometridae material of the Hungarian expeditions to Turkmenistan, a series of specimens of an Agriopis-like species was found. The specimens were collected in different parts of the Kopet-Dagh Mts at the last decade of September and the beginning of October, 1991. Three years later, this species was also found in a larger series in the Central Tien Shan Mts in Kazakhstan, in the same autumnal aspect. These specimens fit well with the holotype of "Selidosema" modestaria Piingeler, 1914 (type locality: Syr-Darya, Baigacum) (Fig. 1), therefore this species was identified as S. modestaria, although the generic placement of the taxon seemed dubious. On the other hand, these specimens display a high external and genitalic similarity with Contropis tagana Wiltshire, 1967, described from Afghanistan. The results of the more detailed studies carried out on a larger material originating from three different populations (Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, NE. Afghanistan) are discussed below.
