DISCUSSION In Europe, some 23 species of Pallopteridae are known so far. Of these, nine species are found in the present study. This number is rather low compared with other Central European countries: 13 species for the Czech Republic and 14 species for the Slovak Republic (Martinék 1997); 16 species for Germany (Martinék 1999) and Austria (Franz 1989) and 15 species for Switzerland (Merz 19986). It may be speculated, that at least the following species should be found eventually in Hungary: Eurygnathomyia bicolor (Zetterstedt) in deciduous forests on chalk at higher altitudes, as well as the lowland speciesToxoneura laetabilis (Loew), T. muliebris (Harris), T. quinquemaculata (Macquart) and T. venusta (Loew) which are all very widespread in Central Europe. Some other European species, like Temnosira ambusta (Meigen) or Toxoneura ephippium (Zetterstedt) are less likely to be expected as they occur in Switzerland only in the alps above 1300 m altitude and have a more boreo-alpine distribution. Acknowledgements - It is my deepest wish to thank László Papp (Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest) very much for his hospitality and friendship during my stay in Budapest and his comments on the first draft of my paper. Further, I thank L. Grève Jensen (Bergen) for sending me a specimen of P. farmosa for comparison. REFERENCES Franz, H. (1989): Die Nordost-Alpen im Spiegel ihrer Landtierwelt.
