Additions and corrections to the list of Pallopteridae of Hungary (Diptera: Acalyptrata) B. Merz Additions and corrections to the list of Pallopteridae of Hungary (Diptera: Acalyptrata) —The paper summarizes our knowledge of the Pallopteridae fauna of Hungary. All 225 specimens in the Hungarian Natural History Museum were examined. Currently 9 species are recorded from this country, of which 3 species are mentioned here for the first time. A brief historical review of Pallopteridae research in Hungary is presented. Key words: Pallopteridae, taxonomy, faunistic list, new records, Hungary. INTRODUCTION The Pallopteridae are usually represented only by a low number of specimens in collections. This may be explained by their clandestine behaviour, because most species are usually found only in shaded places in forests (Merz 1998a). Another reason may be, that adults are active often only for a short time in the late afternoon (Morge 1967). Therefore, it is not surprising that they are poorly known for most countries. This fact will be demonstrated in the next chapter, while reviewing the existing literature about Hungarian Pallopteridae. During a stay at the Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest, I got the opportunity to revise the entire Pallopteridae collection. In addition to the already identified specimens, some 120 unstudied specimens which have been accumulated in the past 20 years, were identified as well. HISTORICAL ACCOUNT The first list of Hungarian Pallopteridae was presented by Thalhammer (1900), who mentions 6), both from Kalocsa, are doubtful, as the interpretation of these species differed between authors in that species from the Carpathian Basin, of which 5 are cited from localities which lie within the actual borders of Hungary. Although no pre1900 specimens of Thalhammer could be traced in the collection of Hungarian Natural History Museum, there are no doubts about the identity of Palloptera umbellatarum (Fabricius), P. ustulata Fallén and Toxoneura modesta (Meigen) (mentioned as Palloptera parallela Loew). However, the records of Palloptera arcuata Meigen (=
