S. Mahunka szerk.: Folia Entomologica Hungarica 60. (Budapest, 1999)
In 1911, 1913 and 1914 Szépligeti has described four new Triaspis (originally Sigalphus) species from the Ethiopian Region (from Tanzania and Transvaal): T. daci (Szépligeti, 1911), T. emarginatus (Szépligeti, 1914), T. pygmaeus (Szépligeti, 1913) and T. testaceus (Szépligeti, 1914). The male holotype of T. pygmaeus is deposited in the Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest; the types of the further three species are in the Dipartimento di Entomologia e Zoológia Agraria, Università degli Studi di Napoli Federici II, Portici (T. daci) and in the Museum für Naturkunde, Berlin (T. emarginatus, T. testaceus). Having examined the holotype of T. pygmaeus the need of its redescription became evident owing to the relatively short original description. Szépligeti's descriptions does not cover several features (i.e. quality of sculpture, relative length measurements) which are necessary to clarify its present-day taxonomic position. Abbreviations applied in the descriptions — Ocelli: OOL = shortest distance between hind ocellus and compound eye, POL = shortest distance between hind two ocelli. — Fore wing venation: cu-a = nervulus, r = first section of the radial vein, 1-R1 and 2-R1 = first and second sections of the metacarpal vein, 3-SR and 4-SR = third and fourth sections of the cubital vein. Triaspis caudatus (Nees) (Figs 1-3) Sigalphus caudatus Nees, 1816: Mag. Ges. Naturf. Fr. Berlin 7 (1813): 250 2d (syntype series destroyed), type locality: Germany(?) (in the original description not indicated). - Snoflák 1953: 297 (in key) and 321 (redescription); Shenefelt 1970: 285 (literature up to 1965); Tobias 1986: 170 (in key). Triaspis arcticus Hellén, 1958: Fauna Fennica 4: 31 (in key) and 32 (description) 2d (syntype series one female + eight males), type locality: Utsjoki (Finland), female lectotype designated by Tobias (1986: 170) + eight male paralectotypes (by present designation), type series in Zoological Museum, Helsinki (Koponen and Tobias 1989: 23), examined. - Shenefelt 1970: 284 (as valid species); Tobias 1986: 170 (in key as valid species); syn. n. (synonymization with T. semilissus Snoflák, 1953 in litt, by Stadlhoffer 1990). Sigalphus australis Szépligeti, 1901 : Pótfűz. Term.tud. Közi. Állatt. Közlem. 64: 286 (in key) and 288 (description) (in Hungarian); Math. Naturwiss. Ber. Ungarn 1904:19 (1901): 199 (in key) and 202 (description) (in German) 2d (syntype series: one female + two males), type locality: Zengg (=Senj) in Croatia, female lectotype (and two male paralectotypes) in Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest; examined; synonymized by Fahringer (1934: 394) as Sigalphus caudatus var. australis. Designation of the male paralectotypes (8d) of Triaspis arcticus Hellén: 3d: "Pummaki Hellén", 3d: "Trifona Hellén", Id: "Vuoremi Hellén", Id: "Yläluostari Hellén", all four localities in Finland. Additional features to Triaspis arcticus — 1.) Female lectotype: Body 3.1 mm long. Antennae damaged, left antenna missing, right antenna with 12 antennomeres. Head in dorsal view transverse, 1.8 times as broad as long, temple rounded and a bit longer than eye. Pterostigma three times as long as wide and issuing vein r distally from its middle. Marginal cell along metacarpal vein (1-R1) one-fourth shorter than length of pterostigma. Tergites 1-2 densely and longitudinally striate with much anastomoses, tergite 3 laterally finely striate without anastomoses, medially smooth and shiny. Ovipositor sheath as long as mesosoma and metasoma combined.
