FOLIA ENTOMOLOGICA HUNGARICA ROVARTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK LX 1999 pp. 239-250 The history of the Symphyta fauna of the Carpathian Basin (Hymenoptera) - Part III/ 1 L. Zombori and V. Ermolenko The history of the Symphyta fauna of the Carpathian Basin (Hymenoptera). Part HI/1. — A list of sawfly species collected in Sub-Carpathia in the last decades is given. Species of the following families are treated: Xyelidae, Pamphiliidae, Blasticotomidae, Argidae, Cimbicidae, Diprionidae, Tenthredinidae (Dolerinae, Selandriinae, Blennocampinae). INTRODUCTION In 1995 the Hungarian and the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences signed a contract for five years to promote the collaboration of two sawfly specialists, the authors, to study the Symphyta fauna of the Eastern Carpathians. Within this framework the first author visited Sub-Carpathia (also known as Ruthenia, Transkarpathia, Zakarpatskij Oblast) of the Unkraine three times, particularly the Rakhiv (Rahó in Hungarian) and the Tyachiv (Técső) districts (j.- járás), both under the Maramaros (Máramaros) administrative office or division (k.k. - közigazgatási kirendeltség). The authors set the task to fully explore the sawfly fauna of Sub-Carpathia. The second author has been continuously visiting this region since the 1950s and collected a good number of specimens and published a number of papers mostly that time (Ermolenko 1957, 1959a, 19596, 1959c, 1960, 1961, 1966, 1979, 1993). Another author from Uzhgorod (Ungvár), 1.1. Bokotey also made extensive collectings in the region and issued his findings in a few papers (Bokotey 1956a, 19566, 1959a, 19596, 1961, 1962a, 19626, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1969). During the first two collecting trips completed in 1996 and 1997 the authors enjoyed help from the Zakarpatskoy Lesnoy Opytnoy Stantsii Ukranskovo NPO "Les", headed by Dr. L. E. Ryzhilo in Mukacheve (Munkács in Hungarian). From here we moved onto Rakhiv, which was our headquarters at the upper reaches of the river Tisza. There, we were the guests of Dr. Fedir D. Hamor, director of the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve. Herewith we should like to sincerely thank both directors for their understanding and the helping hand extended.
