the overwhelming majority of the species is common. The karstic area harbours 17 species (among them: Isophya bey-bienkoi, Pachytrachis gracilis, Podisma pedestris, Paracaloptenus caloptenoides, Stauroderus scalaris, etc.), that do not occur in the S-Z Mts, but, the latter have only three separating species (Poecilimon schmidti, Pararcyptera microptera and Celes variabilis (Chládek 1994; Nagy et al. 1998). The very rare Poecilimon intermedius occurs in both districts, however, the very early detection in the Zemplén Mts by Chyzer (1897) was not fortified since then. Another rarity in these districts, Poecilimon fussi, has also common occurrence here (Nagy et al. 1998). The species "P. matisi" described from the westernmost edge of the Slanské Vrchy (Slovenské Nové Mesto - Mafan 1952) seems to be a synonym of P. fussi (Harz 1969). Considering the relationship of characteristic species between the S-Z and the Bükk Mts, the most conspicuous segregating species against the latter are the presence of the rare Isophya (I. m. stysi, I. brevipennis) and Poecilimon (P. intermedius, P. fussi, P. schmidti) species in the S-Z Mts. Among the species being present in the Bükk Mts. and missing from the S-Z Mts. - there are both Mediterranean (Paracaloptenus caloptenoides, Acrida hungarica, Dociostaurus maroccanus), Palearctic (Oedaleus decorus, Stauroderus scalaris) and even East-Balkanian (Isophya modesta) species (Nagy 1981, Nagy and Rácz 1996) Gulicka (1967) detected 67 Orthoptera species in the Vihorlat Mts - it is about 40 km east from the Slanské Vrchy - and in its southern lowland (the latter is today a waterreservoir). But, a comparison between this and the Orthoptera fauna of the S-Z Mts is difficult, because the faunae of the lowland and of the mountain district are not well separated, and also because some data are questionable. E. g. the occurrence of the tettigoniid Leptophyes bosci, Tesselana tesselata and Barbitistes serricauda is highly improbable and needs confirmation. PROPOSALS FOR NATURE CONSERVATION Based on our results we would like to propose some localities for careful management or for some level of nature conservation. One of the most valuable localities investigated, Tokaj Hill - except the vineyards is protected, however, there are problems with anthropogenic disturbances of valuable habitats for rare species, e.g. Saga pedo, Pararcyptera microptera and Stenobothrus eurasius. We found another valuable locality in the northern part of the area investigated, the mesic mountain meadow Pusté Pole near the village Zlatá Bana. One small part of this locality (approx. 2 ha) is protected from botanical point of view, but we propose to extend the nature protection also for the other parts of the SW exposed meadows (approx. 20 ha) from the orthopterological point of view (occurrence of rare species e.g. Pholidoptera frivaldskyi, Isophya modestior stysi), where the secondary succesion of forest or even the plantation of new pine forest should be stopped. Some species of officially protected Orthoptera species we found in the southern (Hungarian) part of the area investigated (e.g. Stenobothrus eurasius, Saga pedo and Pararcyptera microptera). The protection of some rare species in the northern (Slovakian) part are under consideration (Pholidoptera frivaldskyi, Poecilimon fussi, see Mafan 1952)
