ROVARTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK LIX 1998 pp. 213-220 A check-list of Hungarian ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) L. Gallé, S. Csősz, A. Tartally and É. Kovács A check-list of Hungarian ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) - The latest complete list on Hungarian ants was published by Somfai (1959). Somfai recorded 66 species from Hungary. Since then the number of species has grown, because new species were recorded for the country, and taxonomic revisions split former big species. This paper lists altogether 101 species from the present territory of Hungary. INTRODUCTION The pioneer publication on the Hungarian ant fauna was written by Mayr (1856). Later, Mocsáry (1918) and Somfai (1959) gave comprehensive inventory and key, respectively. Szabó-Patay(1910, 1914a, 19146, 1915, 1918, 1928) and Somfai (1953) also contributed to the knowledge of the Hungarian ant fauna. Since the publication of Somfai 's key (Somfai 1959), Andrásfalvy (1961), Loksa (1966), Gallé (1966a, 19666, 1967, 1969, 1972a, 19726, 1979, 1981, 1986a, 1993), Gallé and Gausz (1968), Barrett (1970), Halmágyi (1978), Gallé and Szőnyi (1988), Varga (1990) and Fenyősiné-Hartner (1994a, 19946) published data on our ant fauna, concerning particular regions or/and species groups. As the myrmecological activities hava been rapidly growing in Hungary, new species were found for the country by the authors of the present paper, majority of which has not been published yet. Recent revisions, which split several species, and the description of new European species (e.g. Seifert 1988a, 19886,1992, 1996, Van Loon et al 1990) also contributed to the increase in the number of the recorded Hungarian ant taxa. The principal aim of this paper is to give a present status list on the known ant species in Hungary and encourage young myrmecologists to publish their faunistic results. In the following inventory, we list the species names and those synonyms which could be found in the Hungarian myrmecological literature. LIST OF SPECIES FAM.: FORMICIDAE SUBFAM.: PONERINAE
