beech forest. It is likely that they were hunting for the females, because the males were in such an excited state, that they tried to approach each other continuously. None of the two species are considered very rare, but large series have been collected only in caves. Heleomyza modesta Meigen, 1830 and Heleomyza sp. — We are not able to separate the females of Heleomyza modesta Meigen and H. ezernyi Collart, 1933. The second species has never been recorded from Hungary till now. In February 6th, 1994 I observed many, probably hundreds of females of one of these species near a waste-belt near the village of Tiszapüspöki. I collected many of them, but kept only some in my collection. It is very sad indeed, that I have not been able to collect one male, if there had been any. The flies were mainly collected on the remains of a fence around the belt. In the same winter I collected in our garden in Pestlőrinc's a male of H. modesta and some females of, I suppose, the same species. Acknowledgement — I thank Dr. L. Papp for checking many determinations and for his advice about collecting Heleomyzidae. LITERATURE Papp, L.
