Prodorsum: Rostrum rounded with two well separated tubercles, both protruding from the rostral margin in dorsal aspect. The rostral setae arising on them, they are curved inwards and finely aciculate and/or ciliate, terminating in sharp tip. Lamellae characteristically converging inwards, their cusps connected with each other by a well developed translamella and separated from the longitudinal lamellae. Lamellar setae short, bacilliform, interlamellar ones absent. Interlamellar region ornamented by short ribs, on the lateral part of prodorsum visible a sillar sculpture. Bothridium opened dorsally, sensillus with a short peduncle, its head round, completely dark. Tutorium present, well arched downwards. Notogaster: Longitudinally oval with a rounded posterior margin. Median part of notogaster with an irregular sculpture, consisting of short ridges. Lateral part well separated with longer and stronger ridges, directed outwards. Notogaster bearing only eight pairs of bacilliform and long setae, all arising on the lateral margin. All setae — excepting setae pi nearly equal long and size, p\ much shorter than the others and arising on the ventral surface of the notogastral margin. Five pairs of lyrifissures well observable. The humeral apophysis is very long, sharply pointed, and strongly curved forwards and downwards. Ventral region: Mentum ornamented by some transversal ribs. Coxisternal region smooth, some wrinkles observable only in front of the genital aperture. Epimeral setal formula: 3-1-2-2. All setae short, bacilliform, their alveoli large and well framed. Surface of the ventral plate ornamented by short and distinct wrinkles. On the genital plates longer and mostly longitudinal ones visible. Six pairs of genital setae arising in one longitudinal line, the anterior pairs longer than the others. Anogenital setal formula 6-12-3. All setae short and simple, they are setiform. A pair of well developed lyrifissures iad located at the anterior corner of the anal opening. Legs: All legs monodactylous, with large claws. The dorsal surface of the claws with small teeth visible. Legs setal formula are: I: 0-4-2+1 -4+2-14+2-1 IV: 0-2-2-3+1-12-1. Solenidium co 2 of tarsus 1 long, directed anteriorly. Solenidia cpi and the very short q> 2 arising on the same very large, long protruding tubercles of tibia 1. Setae d and 1' on tibia 1 distinctly barbed, both ventral setae (v, v") much thinner than the preceding ones and rarely pilose. Some setae on femora 1 and 2 barbulate; in femora 3 and 4 spiniform. Material examined: Holotype female, "Los Dinamós", D. F., Mexico, from mosses, 29. XI. 1992. G. Ríos and R. Villavicencio Colls.; 2 paratypes with the same data; 4 paratypes, Volcano Popocatepetl, Mexico, from mosses, 5. 1. 1983, J. G. Palacios-Vargas Coll.; and 1 paratype (JAMM: 3725), Nexapa, Amecameca, Edo. Mex., Mexico, from soil under Pinus hartureguii, XII. 1981, J. A. Moreno Coll. The holotype and 4 paratypes are deposited in the Microarthropod collection at the Facultad de Ciencias, UNAM; one paratype deposited in the acarological collection of the Institute Politécnico Nacional, Mexico, and 2 paratypes deposited in the Arachnoidea Collection of the Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest. Remarks: The genus Scapheremaeus Berlese, 1913 is very heterogeneous (Travé and Fernandez 1986). The number of claws, the number of the notogastral setae, the presence or absence of lamellar cusps, the position of the genital setae, the form of the notogastral margin, etc. are well varying. The new species belongs to a species group which is characterised by the monodactylous legs and the simple, rounded notogastral margin.
