Some new data to the scale insect fauna (Homoptera: Coccoidea) from Continental Portugal F. Kozár and J. C. Franco Some new data to the scale insect fauna (Homoptera: Coccoidea) from Continental Portugal - Our collecting of scale insects in Portugal yielded 30 species from 7 families. From the collected species 12 (Kuwania rubra Goux, 1938, Atrococcus paludinus (Green, 1921), Balanococcus scirpi (Green, 1921), Trionymus perrisii (Signorét, 1875), Vryburgia amaryllidis (Bouché, (1837), Acanthococcus roboris Goux, 1931, Gossyparia spuria (Modeer, 1778), Pseudochermes fraxini (Kaltenbach, 1860), Parafairmai ria gracilis Green, 1916, Rhizopulvinaria marilima Canard, 1967, Asterodiaspis quercicola (Bouché, 1851), and Unaspis citri (Comstock, 1881), proved to be new for the scale insect fauna of Continental Portugal. The total number of known species from Portugal today is 99. INTRODUCTION The scale insect fauna of Continental Portugal was studied in some detail by several authors as Neves (1936, 1943, 1954), Saraivá (1936a, 1936/?), Seabra (1918, 1930a, 1930b, 1941a, 1941b). Some addition information, and the currently used names may be found in the works of Lindinger (1912), Balachowsky (1954), Borchsenius (1966), Miller et al. (1984), and Kosztarab and Kozár (1988). For Madeira 79 species were reported by Vieira et al. (1983). For Azores there are two recent works published by Carneiro (1979) and Fernandes (1982). Guimaräes (1973) published a list of 52 scale insect species of economic importance. Recently Silva and Carmona (1988) presented a paper on Kermes vermilio and Kermes ilicis. The scale insects on citrus were discussed by Franco and Carvalho (1990) and Carvalho (1994). According to the above literature 87 scale insect species have been recorded in Portugal. This low number and the work of Gomez-Menor (1958), counting 143 species for Spain, show that the fauna needs more intensive study. Our collections were made in the autumn of 1993. The material was collected by the authors, unless indicated otherwise. The dry material and the majority of slides are deposited in the collection of the Plant Protection Institute, Hungarian Academy of Sciences (Budapest, Hungary), and some slides in the collection of the Instituto Superior de Agronómia (Lisboa, Portugal). Species new for the Portuguese fauna are marked with *, The level of infestation is marked as F on a scale 0 to 4 (Kozár et al. 1979). The identification numbers referring to the collection of the senior author, are given in parentheses.
