But these mistakes do not influence my firm belief that a very useful and valuable work was added to the literature of the scientists who are interested in the identification of Oribatids. Therefore, I suggest to all oribatologist dealing with mites the purchase of this book. Dr. Sándor MAHUNKA Pittaway, A. R. (1993): The hawkmoths of the Western Palaearctic. Harley Books. 240 pp. ISBN 0 946589 21 6 Hawkmoths is a group with relatively low species number (especially in the Palaearctic Region), but they are very attractive for collectors, therefore well represented in collections. Due to their relatively large size sphingids are easily detected. In addition, their beautiful colours merit their collectors. The above mentioned facts suggest that we know almost everything about this family, at least the most explored Western Palaearctics. However, this volume serves as an example proving that our knowledge is scarce even in case of a "well-explored" insect group. The main chapters follow the usual standards: historical account, morphology, parasites, classification etc. However, the presence of chapters, for example, breeding, hybrids, give very detailed information what makes this volume unique. Many books simple regurgitate the data and observations from ancestral sources. The sundry observations presented by the author are refreshing, novel and thorough. The main text deals with the description of the given species: nomenclature, short morphological characterization, biology of development stages, host-plants, distribution etc. All the chapters expand upon the usual generalities with detailed up-to-date data for this group, including rearing and breeding observations. In future, lepidopterists should consider adding such a detailed biological information in their publications, especially with groups that are well reported in the European sphere. As for the illustrations, they have been carefully prepared and augment the observations in the text. The same dedication applies to colour tables, appendices, and indexes, making the book highly suited for reference purposes. However, an identification key is lacking and the price is also a bit high, though it should not dissuade you from enjoying the book. László PEREGOVITS
