FOLIA ENTOMOLOGICA HUNGARICA ROVARTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK LV 1994 p. 359-368 The Tardigrada from the Axel Heiberg Island and the associate bryophyte species B. Szymanska The Tardigrada from the Axel Heiberg Island and the associate bryophyte species. Tardigrade species found on bryophytes on the Axel Heiberg Island are listed in this study. The bryophytes were collected by Dr M. Kuc, a member of the Jacobson-McGill Canadian Research Expedition in 1968. Thirteen species of the class Heterotardigrada and 33 of Eutardigrada were found. The list of species is given in the text. The list of bryophyte species on which the lardigrades were found is also included in the study. INTRODUCTION The study lists tardigrades living on bryophytes of the Axel Heiberg Island (Fig. 1). The material for this study was collected by Dr M. Kuc during the Jacobson-McGill Canadian Research Expedition in 1968. List of sites surveyed 1. Baby Glacier 14. Ermine Ridge 2. Baby River 15. Flog Hill 3. Black Crown Peak 16. Gypsum Hill 4. Wolf Mountain The Axel Heiberg Island is covered by glacier and tundra (Fig. 2). Bryophytes are the main environment inhabited by tardigrades. The bryophytes studied were identified by Dr M. Kuc in 1968. To avoid confusion resulting from changes in classification, the species names of the bryophytes were revised by Dr J. Ochyra. The list of bryophyte species on which the tardigrades were found is given below.
