FOLIA ENTOMOLOG ICA HUNGARICA ROVARTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK LIV 1993 p. 57-60 Taxonomic notes on Pachynematus clitellatus Lepeletier and some related species (Hymenoptera: Symphyta) By A. Haris (Received 15 February, 1993) Taxonomic notes on Pachynematus clitellatus Lepeletier and some related species (Hymenoptera, Symphyta). - Author discusses the Pachynematus clitellatus species-group based on own rearing data. The species Pachynematus trisignatus sp. rev. is re-established, introducing its penis valve. There is some uncertainty in the taxonomy of Pachynematus clitellatus and its related species. The cause for it lies in the faulty coupling of the males and females in the literature, which also brought about wrong synonymic names. My results are based on breeding data and comparative studies on the collected specimens. In the present paper I propose to discuss my findings regarding some species of the clitellatus group (P. clitellatus Lepeletier, P. kirbyi Dahlbom, P. trisignatus Förster, P. truncatus Benson, P. xanthocarpus Hartig), which are difficult to identify. The main characteristic features of the clitellatus group: - Sawsheath in dorsal view never emarginate at apex, apical setae pale and weakly bent. - Male with projection from eighth tergite. - Head very strongly expanded behind the eyes. - Scutellum impunctate. - Antenna in $ usually longer than C, in <J longer than C + stigma combined. - Wings hyaline with yellow stigma. Stigma never with dark base. - Hind femur pale yellow, more or less infuscate from base. Benson (1958) described the species shown in Fig. 1 as P. truncatus. According to him Fig. 2 represents the penis valve of P. clitellatus Lepeletier. However, my breeding results do not confirm these. Lindqvist (1978) identifies the male shown in Fig. 2 to be P. trisignatus Forst. However Benson (1958) treats P. trisignatus to be synonym of P. clitellatus Lepeletier. Lindqvist (1961) synonym ized P. truncatus Benson with P. foveolatusKonov/. Benson (1958) and Hellén (1974) treated P. kirbyi Dahlbom an independent species, while Enslin (1917), Berland (1947) and Lindqvist (1976) considered it a synonym of P. clitellatus Lepeletier. Breeding results I bred P. clitellatus Lepeletier males with the penis valve shown in Fig. 1. My finding does not agree with the opinion of Benson (1958), who refers to this male as his own species, P. truncatus.
