FOLIA E N T O M O L O G I C A HUNGARICA ROVARTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK LU (1991) 1992 p. 59-61 Phoretic Scutacarus mites (Acari: Heterostigmata) from Egypt By S. Mahunka and A. M. Zaki (Received August 1, 1991) Phoretic Scutacarus mites (Acati: Heterostigmata) from Egypt. - Examination of three phoretic Scutacaridae species collected from a ptilliid (Coleoptera: Ptilliidae) specimen. Scutacarus emadi sp. n. is described. From a ptiliid specimen, which was collected by the junior author in Egypt, from manure of farm animals many specimens of three scutacarid species were found. These are: Scutacarus longitarsus (Bcrlese, 1905,), Scutacarus pugillator (Paoli, 1911) and a Scutacarus species, which is new to science and its description will be given below. In connection with S. pugillator we re-examined the type series of Scutacarus tothi (Mahunka, 1986) and we believe, that it is the phoretic type of the S. pugillator, therefore, S. tothi is a junior synonym of S. pugillator. Scutacarus emadi sp. n. Measurements. - Length of body: 191-225 jxm, width of body: 164-188 jxm. Dorsal side (Fig. 1): Body habitus reversed ovoid (the figure was made after an embedded specimen), so the clypcus is the widest dorsal segment. Among the dorsal setae five pairs (ci, C2, f, hi, p3) simple, setiform, rarely pilose. Clypeal setae equal in length, setae / very short, setae h2 and pi much longer. Three other dorsal setae (d, e and hi) thick, stick-shaped, with strong spicules on their distal part. Both inner pair of setae on P-segment short, but slightly thickened, with very long cilia on their inner side. Ventral side (Fig. 4): Apodcmcs normally developed, ap. 5 also well sclerotised, thick, extending to the insertion of setae 3b. Anterior sternal plate normal, setae lc stronger and their cilia longer than the other setae on this sternal plate. Posterior sternal plate wide, its anterior margin evenly convex, its lateral margin straight between setae 3c and 4c. All setae originating here very long (e.g. setae 3a and 3b reaching over apodeme 5) and with very long, spiniform cilia. Legs: Claw of leg I strong, placed on a short and wide peduncle, basal squama (seta s) also strong. Among the solenidium co 2 short, much shorter than the basal protuberance of seta d (Fig. 3). Solenidium on tarus II conspicuously long (Fig. 2). Femur of leg IV (Fig. 5) broad, with a blunt spur ventrally. Tibiotarus slightly elongated, bearing 7 long and strong setae.
