Assamodesmus lindbergi Manfredi, 1954 Also the only known member of its own genus, this species was originally described from a cave in Assam, North India (s. MANFREDI 1954), and later correctly placed by HOFFMAN (1979) into Fuhrmannodesmidae. However, despite the quite accurate description, MANFREDI's (1954) original drawings, particularly those of the gonopods, were too schematic to give the right idea on the status of Assamodesmus among the other fuhrmannodesmids. For this reason I have borrowed the type series comprising 2 66 and 1 ^ (s. MANFREDI 1976) Figs 2-6. Assamodesmus lindbergi Manfredi, 1954; 0 lectotype (5) and S paralectotype, gonopods (caudal, frontal, mesal, ventral, and lateraLviews, respectively). Scale= 0. 2 mm and selected as lectotype the male mounted in two different slides that served for the original description and illustrations (s. MANFREDI 1954). The female paralectotype is also completely mounted in slide. I have made another gonopod preparation from the only intact paralectotype to illustrate the gonopod structure in the proper detail (s. Figs 2-6). As one can see, Assamodesmus is indeed a member of Fuhrmannodesmidae, as witnessed by the (sub)terminal orifice of the seminal groove lying on a distinct, separate, distal solenomerite. The overall configuration of the gonopod readily resembles that of the Himalayan Hingstonia (s. CARL 1935; GOLOVATCH 1986, 1987a, c), which is displayed in the presence of a massive distal portion provided with a spiniform process (a), a separate, elongated solenomerite (b), and of a relatively small gonocoxite. However, the striking, somewhat tortiled seminal groove making a characteristic loop seems to be unique among the known genera of Fuhrmannodesmidae and resembles some extent the Himalayan Himalodesmus Golovatch, an indisputable Polydesmidae, as well as certain Paradoxosomatidae due to the rather thick and long solenomerite. In other words, Assamodes mus seems to be a good genus well isolated from the other Fuhrmannodesmidae, including the sympatric representatives known at present.
