FOLIA ENTOMOLOGICA HUNGARICA ROVARTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK XLVIII 1987 p. 233^239 Studies on the life-history of Aradus cinnamomeus in Hungary (Heteroptera: Aradidae) By T. VÁSÁRHELYI and P. BÖRÖCZ (Received April 30, 1987) Abstract: Studies on the life-history of Aradus cinnamomeus in Hungary (Heteroptera: Aradidae). - The postembrional development and phenology of Aradus cinnamomeus are investigated. The species has a two-year life-span in Hungary. Overwintering takes place mostly in L4 and in adult stage. Data are given on sex-ratio, overwintering, proportion, of macropterous females, parasitization and the distribution pattern of individuals. Aradus cinnamomeus Panzer, 1794 is a well-known pest of young pine plantations. The first contribution about its damage to pine-trees was published almost a century ago (SAJÓ 1895). As BRAMMANIS (1975) pointed out, its harmfulness was detected in many cases only when - mostly searching for other pests of pine - its presence and high-abundance were discovered. Thus, the species and its damage was reported from Poland (STRAWTNSKT, 1925), from the USSR (POLUBOJARINOV 1929; TROPIN 1951; PTITSHKOV 1974, with detailed literature), Slovakia (TURCEK 1964), Litvánia (VALENTA 1968), Finland (LAINE 1968 and recently HELTÖVAARA in many publications), Netherland (DOOM 1974), Sweden (BRAMMANIS 1975), In spite of the fact, that the observations of SAJO (loc. cit.) were made in Hungary, the species is hardly known here as a pest of pine-plantations. Sporadic data were published on damage and/or on life-history by BUND (1906), GYORFFT (1957), GÜNTHER (1970), SZONTAGH (1978), VÁSÁRHELYT (1978) without detailed investigations on the biology of the Hungarian populations. The study of the life-history of Aradus cinnamomeus , therefore, added both to the knowledge of the biology of the species in Europe and the knowledge of pests of the pine-stands of Hungary which play increasing role in the forestation of sandy areas in the plain (VÁSÁRHELYI 1981, 1983, 1984; BÖRÖCZ 1985). Material and methods Extensive collectings were carried out between 1978 and 1982 in order to record the distribution of the species in Hungary (VÁSÁRHELYI 1983). Intensive and quantitative sampling took place at Veresegyháza and Vácrátót on sandy areas by the first author (1978-1982) and In Budapest by the second author (1983-1984). At Veresegyháza about 20, at Vácrátót 5 and 15, in Budapest about 15-20 years old pine plantations were the collecting areas, latter was planted for recreational purposes along a new block of houses. For different purposes different samples were taken: numerous (occasionally several hundred) specimens; 10x10 cm bark pieces, 3 from each'tree; 5x5 cm bark pieces, 3-12 from each tree, 3-5 trees in each occasion; sampling of overwintering individuals by removing bark and litter at the foot of trees. In each stand two pine species, Pinus silvestris and P. nigra were plantated, in Budapest only P. silvestris was sampled.
