hairs; T,- entirely deep orange; Tg pale to dark brown; metasomal venter basally black, apically pale brown. Legs entirely or prodominantly black; corbicular fringe black but longer hairs more or less lightened at tip. (Male) Head pale yellow; above laterally predominantly black, area behind ocelli entirely pale yellow or admixed with sparse to considerable amount of black hairs; area above antennái sockets often variably mixed with black hairs, sometimes entirely black; clypeus marginally sometimes with admixture of black hairs of variable amount; vertex and frons laterally black. Mesosoma pale yellow; interalis anteriorly not well delimited, hardly extending beyond anterior intertegular line, sometimes reduced to small centralis or, rarely, to a small spot; scutellaris basolaterally with admixture of a few black hairs; pleura below gradually whitened. Metasoma and T 2 entirely pale yellow, but T 2 discally brownish; T 3 entirely black or admixed with sparse pale yellowish hairs apically, rarely exhibiting obscure ciliation; the lightest specimen pale yellow, postmedially with crescent black area; deep orange, often basally or baso-medially black in variable extent, apical margin sometimes lighter; T,-_g entirely deep orange; pale brown; venter pale yellowish, apically faded orange. Legs pale yellow, corbicular fringe black but longer hairs black to brownish with lightened tip. Ignoring some dubious varieties described by SKORIKOV (1915) from Ganshu, B. (B.) hypocrita comprises at least two subspecies which are mainly distinguished in queen, the darker hypocrita Perez and the distinctly pale banded sapporoensis Cockerell. As only workers and males were collected from N. Korea, it is difficult to determine to which subspecies the Korean population belongs. On account of reduced black hairs on mesosomal dorsum in males and distinct collaris in workers, the examined specimens are tentatively identified with sapporoensis. Specific distribution: Saghalien, Hokkaido, Kunashiris Is., Honshu, Kyushu, Korea, Transbaical and probably N. China (Manchuria) (TKALCÛ 1962, 1965; SAKAGAMI et ISHIKAWA 1969, 1972; ITO et SAKAGAMI 1981). Bombus (Bombus) ignitus Smith Loc. No. 7: 4 ww; No. 8: 3 ww; No. 9: 1 q; No. 10: 28 ww, 1 m; No. 11: 1 w, 1 m; Fig. 17. A total of 39 individuals were collected only from southern areas as the commonest species there. The result agrees with SAKAGAMI. The record from the vicinity of Vladivostok by him suggests the occurrence of this species in northern Korea, probably not on. mountaneous areas, as this species exhibits a typical southerly distribution. Specific distribution: C. China, NE China including Manchuria, Korea, Honshu, Kyushu, Shikoku, Ussuri (TKALCÛ 1962, 1965; SAKAGAMI op. cit.). Bombus (Bombus) patagiatus patagiatus Nylander Loc. No. 1: 11 ww; No. 3: 1 w; No. 6: 1 q, 4 ww; Fig. 2. Collected from NE alone as the most abundant species there, agreeing with SAKAGAMI. Specific distribution: Southern Siberia south of about 60°N, west to N. Russia and NE Europe; Saghalien, Mongolia, Ussuri, NE China including Manchuria, M. China (Ganshu, Kukunor), N. Korea (TKALCÛ 1967). Bombus (Bombus) sporadicus czerskianus Vogt Loc. No. 6: 4 ww; Fig. 4. Obtained from NE alone as in SAKAGAMI. Specific distribution: Siberia including Kamtchatka, Fennoscandinavia, Russia, Mongolia, Ussuri, Saghalien, Kirghiz, C. China (Kukunor), N. Korea, (cf. TKALCÛ, op. cit.). Bombus (Pyrobombus) hypnorum calidus Erichson Loc. No. 3: 1 w; No. 4: 2 ww; No. 5: 2 ww; No. 6: 1 w; Fig. 6. Obtained only in NE as in SAKAGAMI. Specific distribution: Siberia including Kamchatka, Russia, Ural, Europe ranging from Fennoscandinavia to Spain, Saghalien, Kurile Islands, Hokkaido, Ussuri, N. Korea (L0KEN 1973; REINIG 1939; SAKAGAMI et ISHIKAWA 1969; ITO and SAKAGAMI op. cit.).
