/ Riviere Caquele (8.13 S, 20.30 E), 5.IX. 1961. leg. A. de BARROS MACHADO. Measurements: Length of aspis: 176-283 urn, length of notogaster: 378-606 urn, height of notogaster: 202-364 urn. Aspis (Fig. 33): Surface more strongly foveolate laterally ,less strongly medially, being smooth marginally, some rugae also present basally. Crista low. Among the prodorsal setae rostral one the largest, bending Inwards. Lamellar setae dilated, phylliform, interlamellar setae short, resembling a short spine. Sensillus very long, with a fine, serrated velum. Notogaster (Fig. 34): Its shape very characteristic, anterior part elongated, always covering the basal part of prodorsum (Fig. 31). Anterior part with very fine but distinct foveolae, behind it, near to setae c 2 and Cg smooth or finely punctate, the other part of notogaster ornamented with large, round foveolae. Anogenital region (Fig. 35): Ano-adanal plate very high, marginally foveolated. Three pairs of setae arising very near to each other on the inner margin of plates, setae ad. and an^ thinner (Fig. 32) than an 2 , adg phylliform, adg simple and the shortest of all. Measurements: Length of aspis: 242-328 pm, length of notogaster: 470-656 pm, height of notogaster: 313-404 pm. Aspis (Fig. 38): Surface weakly foveolated, a wide lateral part without foveolae, basal part ornamented with some rugae. Rostral and lamellar setae smooth, lamellar setae (Fig. 40) strong, erect, lateral edge of distal end spiculate. Sensillus (Fig. 39) with curved peduncle and with dilated but flattened head, its margin serrate. Notogaster (Fig. 36): Notogastral surface also foveolate, but the ornamentation much weaker than in H. machadol (Balogh, 1958). Surface partly covered by secretion layer. All notogastral setae erect, similar to lamellar setae, among them well-observable length differences existing, e.g. psg and ps^ much shorter than psj. Pori in and ips not visible. Anogenital region (Fig. 37): Adanal setae with a lateral edge, its surface smooth or finely roughened, anal setae thinner and shorter than the adanal ones, setae ad^ longer than adg, setae ad 2 the longest of all. Remarks: Both Hoplophthiracarus species stand very near to each other. They are distinguished from each other by the stronger or weaker sculpture, the shape of the sensillus head and the rostral setae and by the presence or absence ( ? ! ) of pori ips and ih.
