reddish-yellow, the antennae completely yellow, the elytra not so distinctly punctured and the temples being straighter. - Head and abdomen black, elytra dark blue-black, pronotum, legs and antennae reddish-yeUow, maxillary palpi a little darker. Head a little longer than broad, moderately shining, very sparingly punctured, without microsculpture, eyes moderately convex, their longitudinal diameter shorter than the temples (4:1.75) which are straight and converge considerably to the posterior margin; antennae filiform, all segments very long, with rather long setae. The holotype is minus the last two segments of the right antenna and only two basal segments remain of the left. Penultimate segment of the maxillary palpi strongly broadened at the apex and strongly setose, labrum strongly denticulate and with a deep central emargination, very shining and with long slender bristles. Pronotum longer than broad (7.5:5.5), moderately shining, very sparingly and irregularly punctured, without microsculpture, anterior corners strongly rounded to the "neck", only slightly converging to the posterior margin. Elytra longer than broad, broadest at posterior margins, shoulders hardly discernable, shining, irregularly callused, with confused microsculpture. Scutellum large triangular, with fine microsculpture. Abdomen shining, sparingly punctured, with distinct alutaceous microsculpture, broadest at fourth and fifth tergites, narrowing to the apex. Legs long with slender bristles. Holotype specimen minus intermediate pair of legs. - Length 12 mm. Holotype $ unique, Busalnin, 5000 ft, Star Mountains, 16.x. 1975, New Guinea (R. HORNABROOK). Astenus explicatus sp. n. This species is of the same shape and the same short elytra in comparison with pronotum as A. montanellus Cam. (from the Philippines), but it is much smaller and the rugae of the pronotum a little lighter, the legs and antennae yellowish-red. Head slightly broader than long (2.5:2.25), reticulate-umbilicate, eyes very small temples three or four times longer than their longitudinal diameter, labrum finely denticulate; antennae short but all segments longer than broad.Pronotum longer than broad (2.5:2.0) broadest at anterior third with a network of elongate rugae; strongly contracted at both anterior and posterior margins. Elytra transverse (2.0:1.5) shorter than pronotum, strongly punctured. Abdomen shining, rather densely but more finely punctured than the elytra, with fine yellowish pubescence broadest at the seventh tergite. Legs finely pubescent and anterior tibiae with a middle indentation. - Length 4 mm. Holotype £ unique, Agakomatuso, 7000 ft, 26.xi. 1965 (R. HORNABROOK). Astenus interjectus sp. n. This species resembles A. densiceps Bernh. (from Formosa) in colour and puncturation of the elytra, but the head is shorter and more rounded and the pronotum is differently shaped contracting more to the posterior margin. It is also similar to A. sumatrensis Cam. var. jacobsoni . This variety does not have the black central spot on the elytra as in the typical form, but A. in terjectus has a much finer reticulation of the head and pronotum. The var. jacobsoni Cam. also has rather'coarser puncturation of the elytra and could prove to be a different species. - Head, pronotum and last few tergites rufous, elytra, legs and antennae yellow. Head about as broad as long, with fine umbilicate puncturation, eyes moderately convex, their diameter a little longer than the temples viewed from above, with two or three outstanding bristles, and a much shorter pair just before the eyes; antennae filiform, the second segment shorter than the first and third, segments four to ten each slightly shorter than the previous, last segment longer than the penultimate. Pronotum longer than broad (2.5:2.0), broadest at anterior third, converging to the posterior margin, finely umbilicate reticulate, laterally with fine sharp spines, the first pair small. Elytra longer than broad (3.0:2.25), densely, finely punctured, with fine short decumbent setae, with two or three short spines at shoulders; parallel-sided. Abdomen punctured and with fine setae, the punctures forming transverse rows, broadened to the sixth tergite. Legs with a few short slender bristles.Length 4 mm. Holotype ? unique. Madang, 22.xii.1969, at light (R. HORNABROOK). Stilicopsis insolitus sp. n. Compared with S. cheesmani Cam. this species has the puncturation of the elytra a little finer, the pronotum has only one median black band, and the pattern on the elytra is not so dis-
