pontomediterranean species a barrier had developed and is present along the Struma valley region, which isolated the advanced populations of spreading species, and so helped the formation of new species, while the species which were more widespread in the Pontus, and started to spread later towards Northwest, could not get across, and so species formation has not started or is in a preliminary stage. On the other hand it is also possible that populations in South-Western Bulgaria are still in touch with populations in the Pontus through the Mts. Strandza-Mts. RhodopeMts. 'Ali Botus range, but data are missing concerning this possibility. The relatively small differences between populations situated far away could be explained by this ide. At the same time it has to be mentioned that A. wolfschlägeri Boursin was found in these collections in Melnik and Kresna, and even there is a specimen from the Ali Botus Mts. in the old Tuleschkov collection (THTJRNER, 1964). This seems to contradict the above hypothesis. Our present knowledge seems to be very limited for the exact interpretation of the above facts .
