FOLIA ENTOMOLOGICA HUNGARICA ROVARTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK XLII (XXXIV). 1. 1981 p. 163-168 A contribution to the taxonomy of some European species of Limosina Macq. (Diptera: Sphaeroceridae) By J. ROHACEK (Received December 10, 1980) Abstract: Seven new junior synonyms were established during the revision of the type material of European Limosina-specle s . Three species: Limosina parvula Stenhammar, 1854, L. liliputana Rondani, 1880 and Coproica pusio (Zetterstedt. 1847) comb.n. were re-instated from the "species dubiae"; a specific status is given to Limosina grenstedl var. simplex (Richards, 1929). Two little known species: Limosina parvula Stenh. and L. simplex (Rich.) are briefly characterized with figures of the male and/or female terminállá. Lectotypes of six taxa are designated. The present paper should be considered only as a preliminary report on some taxonomic findings obtained during a monographical elaboration of the European species of the genus Limosina Macquart, 1835. A comprehensive study on this group, viz., "A monograph and re-classification of the previous genus Limosina Macq. (Diptera, Sphaeroceridae) of Europe", was produced and prepared for publication last year (1980) but despite all the promises its publication has eventually been refused. This policy caused the fact that the results from the monograph cannot be Included fn the elaboration of the family Sphaeroceridae in the "Catalogue of the Diptera of the Palaearctic Region" made by Dr. L. PAPP as we originally hoped. Thus, the main purpose of this paper is to publish some topical findings based mostly on the examination of the preserved type material so that they could be incorporated in the Catalogue. Besides the discovery of some new junior synonyms, three species are restituted from "species dubiae" and one taxon IB elevated to specific status. All the species dealt with below are fully described and illustrated In detail in the above-mentioned monography which will appear in parts during the next three years. Only some distinctive diagnostical characters are mentioned and illustrated here to avoid confusion, particularly in closely related taxa. My sincere thanks are due to the following persons who enabled me to study the type and comparative material: Mr. B.H. COGAN and Mr. B.R. PITKIN (British Museum, Natural History, London), Prof. Christine DAHL (Zoological Institute, Uppsala), Mr. R. DANIELSSON (Zoological Institute, Lund), Dr. G. DEMOULIN (Institut Royal des Sciences Naturelles de Belgique, Bruxelles), Dr. J.W. ISMAY (University Museum, Oxford), Dr. P. LAUTERER and Dr. J. STEHLIK (Moravian Museum, Brno), Mrs. Sarah MA SC HER INI (Museo Zoologico de "La Specola", Firenze), Dr. L. PAPP (Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest), and Dr. H. SCHUMANN (Zoologisches Museum an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin). Particularly I am indebted to my friend Dr. L. PAPP for his-extremely kind hospitality during my visit in Budapest and for stimulating me into the elaboration of this paper.
