wer towards the posterior margin, more convex at anterior margin. Elytra about as broad as long, evenly but not densely punctured, with about six larger punctures irregularly placed on each elytron and also one on either side of the scutellum which is umbilicate, with semi-decumbent setae and lateral bristles, very shining. Scutellum large, finely but sparingly punctured, with short setae and a very fine microsculpture. Abdomen shining, with an extremely fine microsculpture, each tergite with an apical and a central row of punctures all with bristles, those in the apical row much longer. Legs long, with long bristles and spines on the anterior and intermediate tibiae. Length 17 mm. Holotype p unique, Tep Tep, Finnisterre Hange, Huon Pen, 11.7.1975 (P. Hornabrook). Hesperus multipunctus sp.n. Compared with H esperus Justus (Last) the puncturation of the elytra is not so strong or dense , and much less shining; scutellum more densely and finely punctured, the pronotum is different in being multi-punctate, the abdomen is also more densely punctured. Basically black, but head slightly blue, elytra slightly purple, pronotum slightly green which is more distinct in natural light. Abdomen black, but apical edge of seventh and the whole of the eighth tergite red. Last two segments of the antennae white. Head transverse (7.75:5), moderately shining, with distinct alutaceous microsculpture with a small depression near anterior margin with two rather large punctures on either side and others on the temples; eyes moderately convex, their longitudinal diameter a little shorter than the length of the temples, antennae with first three segments much longer than broad, four and five much shorter but longer than broad, six and seven as long as broad, eight to ten moderately transverse, last segment oblique at apex, all segments with black setae. Pronotum a little longer than broad (8:7), shining, with distinct alutaceous microsculpture, strongly and irregularly punctured, some forming two broken rows on either side of the median line; convex, with anterior corners distinct, posterior corners more rounded where the pronotum slightly narrows with a few bristles along lateral margins and anterior corners. Elytra a little longer than broad (9:8), moderately densely punctured, without microsculpture, with distinct setae, and raised suturai margins. Scutellum large and densely punctured. Abdomen slightly narrowing, with rather large elongate punctures "open" at posterior end, without microsculpture, but with rather long bristles. Tibiae strongly spinose, anterior pair strongly setose, tarsi in male much broadened. Length' 12.5 mm (Aedeagus Figs. 24 and 25). Holotype 8 unique, New Hebrides, West Santo, Tartarii, 4000 ft. 10.10.1933 J.R. Baker, Oxford Untver.Exp. B.M. 1934-141. Hesperus pseudoviolaceus sp.n. Elytra of the same colour as Hesperus violaceus (Fauv.) but the puncturation not quite so dense; the head is considerably broader, segments of the antennae are shorter, the pronotum is shorter and broader, the pronotal punctures are larger, it does not have the satin-sheen of violaceus, the abdomen is less densely punctured, the femora are largely yellow, and the aedeagus is different (Figs. 26-29). Black, elytra violet-blue, femora red, last segment of the antennae creamy-white. Head large, transverse (8.25:5.5), moderately shining, with very indistinct microsculpture, with large punctures on inner margins of the eyes and on the temples, all with long bristles; there are also a few large punctures extending in a row towards the centre from the ocular punctures; eyes a little convex, their longitudinal diameter equal to the length of the temples; antennae with all segments longer than broad, seven to ten each shorter than the previous, last segment a little longer than the penultimate; first three shining, without pubescence, the remaining segments with fine pubescence and setae. Pronotum as long as broad, with alutaceous microsculpture and two pronotal rows of large punctures, there are others at the anterior corners and lateral margins all with long bristles; strongly convex at anterior margin, slightly laterally sinuate at posterior third. Elytra as long as broad, moderately densely punctured, without microsculpture, with short setae and long lateral bristles, suture raised and bordered. Scutellum moderately densely punctured. Abdomen not densely punctured, tergites with apical setae and longer bristles from paratergites . Legs spinose, male with segments of front tarsi broad. Length 14 mm. Holotype unique 6 1 , Wantout, Huon Peninsular, 8.1972 (R. Hornabrook).
