intermediate and posterior tarsi shorter, with the first segments more robust. Black, except legs and maxillary palpi which are rufous. Head broader than long (3.5:2.5) shining, with rather large irregular punctures, without microsculpture. Eyes slightly convex, their diameter viewed from above greater than the length of the temples from which are outstanding bristles; antennae with all segments longer than broad; the second a little shorter than the third more so than the first, segments four to seven shorter, all of about equal length, eight to ten a little shorter than the previous, last segment a little longer than the penultimate. Pronotum longer than broad, shining, with extremely, hardly discernable microsculpture, densely and strongly punctured but leaving a median impunctate band, puncturation similar to N. mundus , but finer and denser than in N. madangensis . very narrowly bordered for posterior half and throughout the posterior margin, laterally weakly sinuate at posterior third, with bristles of varying lengths. Elytra longer than broad at shoulders, but equal at posterior margin, shining, densely and strongly punctured, with fine short setae and a long bristle from the anterior corners. Scutellum finely punctured and pubescent. Abdomen shining, tergites strongly punctured, less so on tergites six to eight, with fine bristles; narrowing to the apex. Legs with tibiae spinose, the first segment of the tarsi rather robust and shorter, about equal to the three following segments. Length 6.5 mm. Holotype £ unique, Musa, New Guinea, 19.8.1975 (R. Hornabrook). Philonthus thermarum Aube J.Nat.Hist. 1963, 2: 368. This species was wrongly identified. It should have been placed in the genus Gabronthus and comprised two species, details of which are as follows: Gabronthus thermaroides Tott. Okapa, 7.1965 (1 ex), 28.8.1965 (2 ex), Awande, Okapa, 27.9.1965 (1 ex), Madang 10/11,1968 (1 ex), Goroka, 17.9.1971 (1 ex), 27.2.1973 (1 ex). Gabronthus corrugatus Tott. Okapa, 7.1965 (2 ex), 27.6.1965 (1 ex). Other specimens of both species were returned to Dr. HORNABROOK named P. thermarum. Only the males of both species can with certainty be determined. Gabrius plumosus sp. n. This is one of the larger species of the genus similar to the Palaearctic G. astutus Er., but differs by having longer antennae, with longer segments, the head has the temples rather longer, the pronotum is narrower and more convex, and does not have the distinct microsculpture of astutus; the elytra and the scutellum are more densely punctured. The aedeagus is also very different. It is also similar to small specimens of G. spadiceüs Sharp., (from Japan), but the head is less elongate, with temples more parallel-sided; the pronotal punctures are six in each row, in spadiceua there are nine (aedeagus Figs. 15 and 16). Completely black, except the apex of maxillary palpi. Head a little longer than broad (3,5:3), moderately shining, with fine indistinct microaculpture, sparsely punctured on temples and on inner margins of the eyes, each with a rather long outstanding bristle; eyes not convex, their longitudinal diameter shorter than the length of the temples ((3:2) which are parallel-sided, in both sexes with a Blight depression between the eyes, more pronounced in the male; antennae with all segments longer than broad, aegments four to six of about equal length, seven to ten each a little shorter than the previous segment, last segment not quite equal to the two penultimate together; basal three or four segmenta with short bristles. Pronotum longer than broad (4:3) ; moderately shining, with very fine alutaceous microsculpture; anterior margin rounded, and converging to a distinct "neck", rather convex, posterior corners rounded but distinct, with a weak lateral sinuation at posterior third; with lateral punctures and pcrrect bristles, two rows each of six punctures. Elytra longer than broad (5:4) at shoulders, broadening to the posterior margin, moderately shining, very densely and finely punctured and pubescent, with lateral bristles. Scutellum punctured, pubescent, with transverse microaculpture. Abdomen densely and finely punctured, less so on tergites aix and seven, with fine long setae; narrowing to apex. Legs rather long, setose, first segment of posterior tarsi shorter than following three together, anterior tarsi with segments simple in both sexes. Size 6.5-7 mm.
